LV 76-78, Volvo's first multi-purpose vehicle

30s were decade of growing success in the design and manufacture of Volvo trucks. Although the first generation of trucks looked, at least from an aesthetic point of view, rather old-fashioned, Volvo soon caught up with more established competitors in Europe and around the world. V 1932 the outdated LV 60 left the scene, effectively creating a gap in the range.

It was launched in 1934 with the aim of enriching and modernizing the range in order to gain leadership in the light truck market in Scandinavia, freeing it from the dominance of American products. series LV 76-78followed a few years later from LV79... The LV 76-78 series is considered one of the most stable, if only because of the large number of active copies still existing in the Scandinavian countries.

One step, three courses

LV76, 77 and 78, which were located in the range of carrying capacity 1-1,5 tons, they had in common wheelbase 3.400 mm; The differences were mainly in the size of the tires and in rear suspension.

The lighter model (LV76) was equipped both front and rear with smaller springs, while the rear was fitted with 6.00 / 20 tires. LV77 and 78 instead they have the same pendants (sturdier) but featured rear tires. V course were respectively 1, 1,25 and 1,5 tons.

Engines 65 and 75 hp

This gives aesthetic point of view The PHs were very reminiscent of the cars from which we stylistically borrowed: for example, the front end was the same as that of the Volvos. PV653 and PV658although the fenders were wider due to the larger tires.

All three were powered by engines. 3.266 cc EB and 65 hp, which guaranteed good performance even with low PTT. Several years later more powerful engine, FROM 75 h.p. and 3.670 cc. See EC series... Traditionally Volvo trucks were equipped with 4-speed manual transmissionand the braking system was hydraulic on all four wheels.

Versatile full range

In 1936 the version was presented slightly more powerful, LV79, with significantly stronger chassis components and twin rear wheels, with PTT 4,75 t and a wheelbase of 3.800 mm; Together with younger brothers  it had a gearbox and an engine.

With the heaviest model LV they have become "multi-role", that is, suitable not only for distribution, but also  for more intensive use such as passenger transport or shipbuilding leggera.

LV101 arrives

V79 also had the ability withstand different settingsFrom simple box bodies for lighter models to dump trucks, heavy transport equipment and bus bodies.

The LV76-77-78 line was replaced at the end of the 30s by the new LV101 series. While small production of the LV79 series continued throughout the XNUMXs,  although already outdated LV101.
