This is due to the fact that the forces acting in a collision are so great that, for example, a passenger carrying a child on his lap is not able to hold him. It is also not enough to fasten the child with the factory seat belts installed in the car. They do not have a wide enough range of adjustments that would allow the child to take a safe position.
Therefore, children should be transported in child seats. They must have an approval, which is issued after a series of tests, i.e. crash tests of vehicles equipped with such a device. The seat must be adjusted to the weight of the child. In this regard, car seats are divided into five categories, differing in size and design.
Categories 0 and 0+ include car seats for children weighing up to 13 kg. It is important to transport the child backwards. This reduces the risk of head and neck injuries.
Category 1 seats can accommodate children between the ages of two and four and weighing between 9 and 18 kg.
Category 2 includes car seats for children 4-7 years old with a body weight of 15-25 kg.
Category 3 is intended for transportation of children over 7 years old and weighing from 22 to 36 kg.
When choosing a seat, pay attention to the possibility of adjusting the seat belts and the base. This makes the baby feel comfortable. It's also worth checking the certificates of the place. In addition to the UN 44 certification required by regulations, some car seats are also certified by consumer organizations. They are issued on the basis of more detailed tests, such as collisions between vehicles at higher speeds and side collisions. This means increased security. You should not buy car seats of unknown origin, especially used ones. There is a possibility that they come from a salvaged vehicle, in which case their use is not recommended for safety reasons. The seat may have a damaged structure or seat belt buckle, and any damage of this type may be completely invisible.
