How 5W40 stands for
This mark corresponds to the SAE classification (viscosity classification):
5 - viscosity of the substance at low temperatures
W - winter (winter), applicable in the winter season
40 - the level of fluidity at high temperatures.
Subtracting the second number from the first determines the lower limit of stable operating temperature: 5W40 oil can operate in the range from -35 to 40ºC.
