Maz 509 dump truck

So good morning everyone. This time I decided to tell you about this wonderful Soviet truck that I fell in love with as a child. It would seem, why the hell do I need this, even though I live in Europe, and why should I remember this dinosaur? But I have very good memories of it: I spent a lot of time in such a hut as a child, and not in one, but there were several. Dad was working at a car depot at the time, so the opportunity arose. There was also a tractor, a fuel truck and another tractor. Yes, my dad was lucky enough to drive this before he even had a driver's license. It was a tractor with a semi-trailer. But for some reason, his feelings were not very good, as he said. And I would be happy as a child if I could lead a steel dragon like that! But all this is poetry, in fact, now about the tractor itself. Infu honestly copied from where it should be. Then let's get started.

MAZ-500 is a Soviet truck produced at the Minsk Automobile Plant in 1963-1990. The prototype car was released in 1958.

The first prototypes appeared in 1958, and the pilot assembly of trucks began in 1963. The first production cars MAZ-500 rolled off the assembly line in March 1965. On December 31, 1965, the last car of the MAZ No. 200 family rolled off the assembly line, and in 1966 the plant completely switched to the production of cars of the MAZ-500 family. Unlike its predecessor, the MAZ-500 had a cab-over-engine layout, which made it possible to slightly reduce the weight of the car and increase the length of the loading platform, which ultimately led to an increase in weight by 500 kg of payload.

The basic option was an onboard MAZ-500 with a wooden platform with a carrying capacity of 7500 kg with a wheelbase of 3850 mm. The car had a characteristic decorative grille of 14 vertical ribs, which was attached to the rear wall of the passenger compartment by a casing. The cars were equipped with a 5-speed gearbox with synchronizers for four higher gears and power steering. Thanks to the powerful engine, the MAZ-500 could tow a trailer with a gross weight of 12 kg.

The new "500th" family was a line of models, which, in addition to various options for flatbed vehicles, also included a MAZ-503 dump truck, a MAZ-504 truck tractor, a MAZ-509 timber carrier, and various special equipment MAZ-500Sh.

In 1970, the MAZ-500 was replaced by the MAZ-500A with a wheelbase increased by 100 mm (up to 3950 mm) and a load capacity increased to 8 tons. The overall dimensions are adapted to European standards. The gear ratio of the main gear was changed, as a result of which the maximum speed of the car increased from 75 to 85 km / h.

Externally, the second generation 500 can be distinguished by a new "checkered" grille. The casing behind the cab also disappeared. Behind the doors, at the level of the door handle, a turn signal repeater appeared.

The MAZ-500 and its modifications remained in production until 1977, when they were replaced by the new MAZ-5335 family.

MAZ-500 could work normally in the complete absence or malfunction of electrical equipment, for example, start off “with a pusher” - the design lacked absolutely necessary electrical components for engine operation, and the power steering was hydraulic. Thanks to this feature, the car received special reliability and survivability in the army, where it was successfully used even despite the lack of all-wheel drive. In this mode of operation, the unmasking of radio interference was also completely excluded.

MAZ 509 timber carrier - a popular special transport of the Soviet era

Maz 509 dump truck

In the post-war period in the USSR, the development of the industry would have been impossible without an increase in the number of freight transport. One of the largest truck manufacturers at that time was the Minsk Automobile Plant. In the 60s, this plant began producing completely new trucks, which received the designation MAZ-500. In addition, the manufacturer based on this truck produced a number of special equipment, including vehicles designed for logging operations. The trucks used to transport timber received their designation - MAZ-509.

Timber truck MAZ-509

MAZ-509 was a tractor equipped with a dissolution trailer. Timber carriers based on MAZ 500 series trucks have been produced for a long time, during the production period they were modernized twice. The production of MAZ timber trucks began in 1966 with the MAZ-509P model.

MAZ-509P was an experimental series with a not very large circulation of cars. Production of this version did not last long, until 1969.

Immediately after the start of production of the MAZ-509P model, the plant's designers began to search for and eliminate the shortcomings of this car. The result of this was the almost parallel production of a slightly improved model - the MAZ-509. The production of this model was longer: its serial production began in 1966 and ended in 1978.

The MAZ-509 model was replaced in 1978 by a timber carrier with the designation MAZ-509A. It was the last timber carrier built on the basis of MAZ 500 series trucks. The MAZ-509A model was produced until 1990.

Design features

As already mentioned, the timber carrier was built on the basis of the MAZ-500, but had a number of differences. At that time, all MAZ trucks were among the most modern in the USSR, but in terms of transmission, the timber carrier was quite a bit different from the MAZ-500.

The power plant MAZ-509 did not differ from the models of the 500th series, it was a new power unit YaMZ-236. This engine was a 6-cylinder, with a V-shaped arrangement of cylinders, had a water cooling system. Its power was enough to produce both a truck tractor and a timber carrier on the basis of an ordinary MAZ-500 truck.

But the transmission that was used on the MAZ-509 was somewhat different from other models. The timber carrier became the first car of the Minsk plant, which was equipped with all-wheel drive. In addition, the gearbox has been modified for the timber truck. For MAZ-509 models, it was 5-speed, and the gear ratios of the box also differed. At first, a front axle with a planetary gear was installed on timber trucks, which was quickly abandoned in favor of a conventional bridge structure.

Used semi-trailers

For the transportation of wood by this tractor, two dissolution trailers were used: GKB-9383 and TMZ-803M. These trailers were two-axle and equipped with a self-traction mechanism. This mechanism made it possible to fold the cart from the trailer and load it onto the tractor. When the cart was not used and loaded onto the tractor, the MAZ-509 was two-axle, but when it was necessary to transport timber, the trailer unfolded and the timber carrier became four-axle, with two drive axles. The use of these dissolution trailers made it possible to transport timber from 17 to 27 m long on the MAZ-509.

Modifications

A series of MAZ-509 timber trucks consisted of three models that differed slightly from each other. If we compare the models MAZ-509P and MAZ-509, then they had differences in the technical part.

The experimental model MAZ-509P was equipped with a single-plate clutch, had a front axle with a planetary differential.

But on the MAZ-509, the clutch was replaced with a double-disk one, the bridge was changed, the gear ratios of the gearbox and transfer case were changed, which led to an increase in speed and load capacity. But outwardly, these two models did not differ from each other, they were equipped with a cabover cab from the MAZ-500.

The differences between the MAZ-509 and MAZ-509A models were completely reduced to appearance. The cab from the MAZ-5335 truck was already installed on the later MAZ-509A model. From the technical side, 509 and 509A did not differ.

Timber truck MAZ-509 from the largest Soviet manufacturer

As you know, any war sooner or later ends in peace. And therefore, it is not surprising that the Soviet Union, having defeated fascist Germany in its time, after the end of hostilities, began to actively restore the destroyed state property. It goes without saying that any construction requires special equipment. In this regard, a special burden fell on the Minsk Automobile Plant, which began production of its own timber carrier. We will talk about this in this article and find out, in particular, how much the MAZ-509 frame weighs.

Updated car park

Initially, the 500th series, to which this car belongs, was progressive and to some extent turned the minds of Soviet engineers and drivers. And all because the developers of the car proposed to place the engine directly under the cab, and not in front of it, as it was before. In addition, the cab itself received the ability to tip over, which made it easy to get to the main components of the MAZ-509. In addition, the absence of a hood made it possible to increase the length of the entire truck and increase its carrying capacity. Initially, such an engineering proposal was met with hostility, but foreign experience has shown that such machines are quite feasible, and therefore the technical commission approved the project.

Start of production

On April 6, 1966, the assembly of the first copy of the MAZ-509P began. This wooden carrier was produced, as they say, piece by piece and had certain shortcomings, which were quickly eliminated right on the finished machines.

The technical parameters of this truck had significant differences from the vehicles that the Minsk plant had previously produced. Let's start with the fact that the MAZ-509 axles were all-wheel drive, and this unit turned out to be the only one that went into the series.

Worthy change

The gradual technical modernization of the car led to the fact that he could go faster. The speed of the truck has increased from 60 km/h to 65 km/h, which was made possible by changing the gear ratios of the gearbox. MAZ-509 differed from its parent in that it had a wider wheelbase, the value of which immediately increased by 10 centimeters. A double-disk clutch also appeared and the carrying capacity increased (by half a ton). The front axle has also undergone changes: conventional gearboxes were installed instead of planetary ones.

appointment

MAZ-509, the frame of which was distinguished by increased rigidity, was developed and served for transporting timber both along special roads and along protective paths. At the same time, he had the opportunity to engage in logging. In order to guarantee optimal loading/unloading conditions, since 1969 the machine has been equipped with a winch with a rotating saddle and folding legs. The rider was able to withstand a load equal to 5500 kgf. The car was completed with a dissolution trailer: TMZ-803M or GBK-9383. These mechanisms had two axles and a self-propelled traction device, which made it possible, if necessary, to fold the trailer bogie and transport it to the tractor. In those days when the trolley was not used and loaded onto a tractor, MAZ became two-axle. When there was a need to transport firewood.

Technical specifications

The wooden conveyor is based on a riveted frame consisting of stamped elements. The axles have a dependent spring suspension, hydraulic double-acting shock absorbers are installed in front. A 180-strong atmospheric YaMZ-236 diesel engine is used as a power unit. The engine has 6 cylinders arranged in a V shape. Fuel is supplied by a mechanical high pressure pump equipped with a centrifugal speed controller.

The engine has a forced liquid cooling system. At another request, a liquid heater was installed on timber trucks. The device made it easy to start the engine at an ambient temperature of up to -40 ° C. The fuel supply is carried out in 2 tanks containing 175 liters of liquid each.

The gearbox has 5 forward speeds. In addition, a transfer case is used that distributes torque between the axles. The design of the drive has a center differential that increases patency. Between the transfer case and the crankcases of the axle shafts, cardan shafts with splined connections are installed. Twin wheels are installed on the rear axle. The tires have a standard road pattern, but there were versions of the car with off-road tires.

The brake system of a drum-type vehicle with a pneumatic drive. The source of compressed air is a compressor mounted on the power unit. The truck uses 24 V electrical equipment. The steering is equipped with a hydraulic booster.

Dimensions and technical characteristics of the car:

  • length - 6770mm;
  • width — 2600 mm;
  • height (along the edge of the fence, without load) - 3000 mm;
  • height in the transport position (with dissolution installed on the tractor) - 3660 mm;
  • base - 3950mm;
  • front / rear wheel track - 1950/1900 mm;
  • minimum ground clearance (under the rear axle housing) - 310 mm;
  • mass dissolution with cargo - 21000 kg;
  • maximum weight of the road train - 30 kg;
  • fuel consumption (standard, with load) - 48 liters per 100 kilometers;
  • movement speed (with load) - 60 km / h;
  • the distance required to stop (from 40 km / h on dry and hard ground) - 21 m;
  • lift angle (at full load) - 12 °.

The characteristics of the truck allow transporting sawn timber with a length of 6,5 to 30,0 m; a special trailer-dissolution model GKB-9383 or TMZ-803M is used to lay the ends of the shafts. The trailer is equipped with a 2-axle swivel axle controlled by cable drives.

The tractor has special equipment that allows you to load the solution into the back of a truck.

In this form, the machine had a shorter length, which made it possible to move between work sites on public roads. The drum winch was driven by a separate gearbox mounted on the gearbox.

A 3-seater all-metal cabin of a welded structure was installed on the timber carrier. The cabin has 2 side doors and a separate berth. To access the power unit, the unit leans forward on special hinges. Sliding windows in the doors, a wiper system and a heating system with a fan are included as standard. The cab has a separate driver's seat that can be adjusted in several directions.

Modifications

The Minsk Automobile Plant produced several variants of a wooden truck:

  1. One of the first versions is the 509P model, which was supplied to customers for only 3 years (since 1966). The car used a front drive axle with planetary gears on the hubs. The transmission uses a dry clutch with 1 working disc.
  2. In 1969, a modernized model 509 car was installed on the conveyor. The car was distinguished by a modified clutch scheme, modified gear ratios in the transfer case and gearbox. To simplify the design, cylindrical sprockets began to be used on the front axle. Design improvements made it possible to increase the carrying capacity by 500 kg.
  3. Since 1978, the production of the MAZ-509A began, which received similar modifications to the basic version of the truck. For unknown reasons, the car was not given a new designation. The external change was the transfer of headlights to the front bumper. A new decorative grille appeared in the cabin with combined lamps in cartridges instead of holes for headlights. The brake drive received a separate drive axle circuit.
