The Mazda CX-8 debut, confirmed on March 60, will be the first model in the brand's large product group, which will also include the CX-80 three-row large SUV, as well as the CX-70 and CX-90.

Interestingly, the new generation Mazda6 will also use the same architecture as the aforementioned SUVs, but Mazda hasn't mentioned the midsize vehicle in its roadmap for large product groups, which will likely see the CX-60 in Australian showrooms later this year. year and then the CX-80 in 2023.

What can we expect from the CX-60?

Well, the cat is already out of the bag in terms of styling, and a video has surfaced online showing off the aesthetic of Mazda's latest SUV well ahead of schedule.

The CX-60 will stand above the CX-5 midsize SUV both in terms of positioning and size (and likely price), but exact dimensions have yet to be revealed.

For reference, the CX-5 is 4550mm long, 1840mm wide, 1680mm high and has a 2700mm wheelbase.

However, it's a plug-in hybrid powertrain, a first for Mazda, and should inspire customer cravings for Mazda.

Confirmed for the Australian launch of the CX-60, the PHEV uses a 2.5-liter inline-four petrol engine and an electric motor combination for a total system output of 223kW.

While torque figures have yet to be released, the plug-in CX-60 easily outperforms the 170-litre, 2.5kW turbo-petrol CX-5.

In fact, the CX-60 PHEV can compete with more premium plug-in hybrids such as the BMW X3 xDrive30e, Range Rover Evoque R-Dynamic HSE PHEV, Lexus NX 450h+ F Sport, Mercedes-Benz GLC300e and Volvo XC60 T8 PHEV Polestar. with a capacity of 215 kW, 227 kW, 227 kW, 235 kW and 311 kW, respectively.

“The first Mazda PHEV powertrain will offer smooth and powerful acceleration, giving the driver more confidence and driving pleasure in the widest range of driving scenarios,” Mazda said in a statement.

Having a plug-in hybrid flagship would make sense as Mazda seeks to reposition itself to become a more prestigious player in the market compared to the likes of Toyota, Hyundai and Ford.

However, expect to see other engine options as well, including the potential for an inline-six with both petrol and diesel options.

The 48-volt mild-hybrid system is also expected to play a role in the CX-60 engine lineup to help reduce fuel consumption.
