Mazda2 1.25i TE

The design changes are noticeable, but so modest that a little boldness can be expected from the designers of the beautiful Mazda6, the impressive CX-7 and the legendary MX-5. There are not enough bumpers, headlights and a bit of interior repair, so we can safely say that the Mazda2 will be a bestseller for another year until a completely new model is presented. Outside, we immediately notice new headlights in line with current fashion trends and taillights that can be easily inserted into the tuning section.

Nevertheless, the Mazda twin (which replaced the Demia in 2002) remains an interesting city car, modest enough that even the most awkward, delicate halves have no particular problems with it as it zigzagged through the hustle and bustle of the city. this is spacious. It is enough that you can easily store larger purchases in the trunk. The 270-liter trunk remains small, which is to be expected from a car with such modest proportions, but unfortunately it does not have a movable rear bench that would increase the ability to carry even larger items when needed. Be that as it may, the competitors are overtaking the Japanese manufacturer in this.

The shape of the dashboard is preserved. If not for the "silver" accessory in the center of the dashboard, we would even say that it is sterile, indistinct, so it still has some design freshness. Regardless of its appearance, it is useful, with equipment that the best cars would envy (e.g. front and dual side airbags, mechanical air conditioning, radio with CD listening, which can also be controlled using buttons on the steering wheel. ABS, four power windows, central locking ..), and of the highest quality.

Be that as it may, it has once again been shown that we have nothing to complain about about the reliability and workmanship, which puts Mazda at the top of all car brands. And that's probably what makes all Mazdas (including the smallest two, albeit to a much lesser extent) attractive.

We had the weakest version in the test, as a 1-liter four-cylinder engine with only 25 horsepower rumbled under the hood. Yes, you read that right, this is a legendary motorcycle that Mazda co-created with Ford and which you can get back four years after the Fiesta (see Avto magazine this year number 75 where we published a little Ford baby test on page 7) ... The engine is not athletic and cannot be economical because it needs to be propelled for modern (more dynamic) traffic flows.

However, we can confirm that it is strong enough for an undemanding driver who rarely overtakes and refuses to break records on the way to work or to the store. The maximum torque is between two thousand and four thousand rpm, where it pulls satisfactorily and is not too loud. Above four thousand rpm and up to six thousand on the engine speedometer (where the red field begins), it runs out of power and only gets loud, so we advise you to moderate with the accelerator pedal and use an excellent five. - transmission speed several times.

The shift lever has short strokes and the gears shift accurately and reliably, making it a pleasure to get through gear. At the same time, it must be said that even the steering mechanism is very precise, and together with a reliable chassis, it makes a much more sporty impression than even the designers of this car intended and wanted. It doesn't hurt to suggest it, does it?

The Mazda2 remains a reliable city car that wants to maintain its share of sales despite a modest design update. For anything more, we'll have to wait for a new model that will - we're sure of it, given the attractive new vehicles from Mazda's lineup - definitely more attractive and therefore more interesting.

evaluation

  • Despite a modest design update, the Mazda2 is still a very useful city car. With this (old and tried) engine, it is undemanding to drive and undoubtedly pampers with TE equipment.
