Test drive Mercedes GLE 350 d: an old star in a new shine

The ML model now carries the GLE designation under the new Mercedes model nomenclature.

You can distinguish the Mercedes GLE 350 d from the previously produced W166 facelift mainly by the inscriptions and the location of the lights - in fact, the car has remained practically unchanged, so in this case it is a classic facelift combined with a change in model designation, and not for a new generation car. What, in fact, for fans of the brand can be described as good news - a massive SUV still remains as comfortable, safe and functional as it should be for a classic representative of the brand. Outside, the styling changes will no doubt make the exterior look more modern, while the interior is (almost) the same.

Upgraded vision, familiar technique

From a technological point of view, perhaps the most significant innovation is the introduction of a nine-speed automatic transmission, which operates smoothly and almost imperceptibly, but without overt sporting ambition. This also applies to the general performance of the car on the road - the Mercedes GLE prefers to give the driver and his companions that special feeling of safety and tranquility, which for decades has been considered one of the most valuable qualities of Mercedes, instead of getting to work. extreme adventure. And not to be misunderstood - if that's what you want him to say, the Mercedes GLE can drive quite sportily, but it's not his favorite pastime. The reason for this is both precise, but not very direct adjustment of the steering wheel, and a noticeable body tilt in faster corners. On the other hand, driving at a constant speed on the highway is the crown of discipline for the GLE - in such conditions, kilometers are literally invisible to passengers in the cabin.

Classic Mercedes

What else does Mercedes offer? For example, an updated infotainment system with enhanced features and updated controls. On the positive side of the W166, as before, is the very good suspension comfort. Equipped with the optional Airmatic undercarriage (BGN 4013 663), it smooths out both large and small irregularities in the road surface with great confidence. In addition, the Mercedes GLE can carry an impressive payload (XNUMX kg).

The diesel V6, which runs quietly and reliably in brilliant collaboration with the new nine-speed G-Tronic usually developed by Mercedes, is also well-mannered. Its thrust is confidently and evenly distributed in almost all possible operating modes, and the sound when forcing becomes quite pleasant to the ear. Average fuel consumption in a combined driving cycle is about ten liters per hundred kilometers.

CONCLUSION

The Mercedes GLE has not changed the character of our well-known ML - the car wins sympathy with unsurpassed ride comfort, harmonious drive and impressive functionality. A concept that will appeal to traditional Mercedes fans.
