The aqueducts were built to supply running water to Lugdunum, then the capital of the Three Gauls. The longest, the Guier aqueduct, collected water from Gere to Saint-Chamond (department of the Loire) to transport it over 86 km to Lugdunum!

Some remnants of this monument are still visible, in particular in the Pla de l'Ere in Chaponoste, a unique site in France that has been classified since 1900!
