Moto Guzzi Stelvio 1200 4V

It is also called the new Moto Guzzi touring enduro, which world premiered in the idyllic setting of Tuscan villas, castles and hills. The winding and impeccably paved roads are not as difficult as the roads on the specified pass, but they are still enough to feel and experience some of the magical myth that clings to Moto Guzzi.

Looking at the Moto Guzzi motorcycles that have been built for many years in a factory in the idyllic Mandella Lario by a beautiful lake, some of them remain completely cold, while for others the emblem of a mighty flying eagle means everything in the world. Guzzi is one of the motorcycles that saw the light of day when the Otto engine was a completely new invention.

Over the years, motorcycles of this brand have acquired the status of fast, reliable and high-quality motorcycles that do not skimp on the latest technical inventions and selected parts. This motorcycle was also extremely popular in our land, everyone loved it, it was also used then by Milica and YLA. After years of financial difficulties, he came under the auspices of the Piaggio Group, and now Guzzi is writing a new story there.

Let's go back to the history of Stelvio, an enduro that, according to leading people, is the pioneer of a new era of motorcycles from this factory. At the time of his birth (which also meant the end of a major renewal of the Moto Guzzi motorcycle line, which had lasted two years), the burden of attracting new customers, that is, those who were still not loyal to this brand, lay on him. placed in the cradle.

The matter was perfectly clear from the very beginning. The motorcycle must be tailored to the wishes and needs of the customers, it must be innovative and offer some added value. They achieved this by reorganizing their sales and service network and spare parts storage, as well as by introducing modern production and control standards. However, since this is also offered by established European and Japanese competitors in this segment, have they played on the emotion card as well? at Guzzi they bet on unmistakable Italian charm and style, exceptional design, individuality, excellent performance and enviable handling.

On the way, you will get to know Stelvia very quickly. It's not particularly revolutionary in terms of design, but the aluminum muffler, twin headlights and gently rounded yet crisp lines are recognizable enough. The fuel tank is conveniently flat at the top, holding 18 liters of gasoline, but there is still plenty of room in the housing on the right side for a handy box for gloves, documents or other small items. It opens with a simple push of a button that controls the electronic lock.

The taillights, which contain LEDs instead of bulbs, are tucked slightly under the rear, which is muddy-ready, as the dirt from the road barely reaches that corner. The wheel rim is made of aluminum, and instead of alloys, classic spokes are used for tight contact between the rim and the hub. The driver's seat is comfortable and spacious, upholstered in smooth non-slip material, just like the passenger seat, which is also fitted with metal side rails.

There is a useful drawer under the seat where you can store a first aid kit and, in case of emergency, a well-folded rain suit. Unfortunately, there is also an air intake for the unit, which can become clogged due to careless stacking of luggage and inadvertently suffocate at least half of the two-cylinder cavalry.

From a technical point of view, the Stelvio brings a lot of innovation, but it remains the Guzzi as we know it in recent years. The base of the device is taken from the Grizzo 8V model, but the Stelvio has a whopping 75 percent of all parts, to be exact, 563 parts. It has a 90-degree transversely-mounted V-twin engine with four valves each, but that sounds better in Italian – quattrovalvole!

The oil pan is divided into two chambers, in the first one the oil pump serves to cool the unit, and in the second one to transport the lubricating medium to its vital parts. Thanks to the hydraulic distributor, both pumps can operate in a three-stage mode. A newly developed camshaft drive chain ensures a quieter operation of the unit, while Marelli electronics and injection nozzles are responsible for lower consumption and cleaner exhaust. The exhaust system ends with a large muffler, built according to the so-called two-in-one system. Overall, it is modern enough for the Stelvio to comply with Euro3 environmental regulations.

Thus, the unit offers a proven base and modern technology, develops 105 "horsepower" at 7.500 rpm and offers 108 Nm of torque at 6.400 rpm. Called CA.RC, Guzzi's final drive-to-rear power transmission system is also written in leather with these characteristics of the unit and six-speed gearbox.

Not only on paper, but also in practice, Stelvio promises a lot. Everything on this bike can be customized to suit your personal needs. The position of the front brake and clutch lever, the position of the gear lever and the driver's seat height (820 or 840 mm) are adjustable, while the front windshield, front fork and rear single shock absorber are manually adjustable. All of these options make the driver sit upright and comfortable, while the superior ergonomics of the wide steering wheel switches and grips provide an excellent, sometimes even slightly elevated, driving experience.

On the spot, the Stelvio is a little uncomfortable due to the engine's high center of gravity and a weight of 251 kilograms, but this is especially troubling for the little ladies. When you press the starter button, the engine, cold or warm, starts instantly, deep bass softly scratches your ears, and immediately after the first movement, the indicated awkwardness disappears instantly. Stelvio is mobile and obedient. It pulls perfectly in all gears, regardless of mainshaft RPM, responds smoothly and smoothly to gas addition and removal, as if it were not a two-cylinder engine. When prompting the animal to scream that the permissible harassment is coming to an end, the warning light also comes on before the electronic ignition limiter is activated.

Standard Pirelli tires provide steep and deep slopes and ample grip on gravel roads. Stelvio cannot carry such a real SUV, but it is not designed for that either. The brakes are solid and powerful, but the precise feel is lost somewhere between the frame and the front fork. Probably the point is in adjusting the stiffness of the suspension.

Unfortunately, it is impossible to evaluate the work of the ABS, since it will only be available in six months. Regardless of altitude, it can reach speeds of over 200 kilometers per hour, and the average speed on highways does not burden it due to the long sixth gear. Even otherwise, the gear ratios are calculated “intelligently” and recorded on the skin for a comfortable and dynamic ride. The gearbox is fast and precise, the gear lever movements are short in a sporty way, we were only concerned about the proximity of the gear lever and sidestand foot. The gust of wind is highly dependent on the windshield setting, it can be very strong or almost zero.

And the equipment? This is one of the sweetest elements of this motorcycle. Serial? Side and center stand, side suitcase holders, rear rack, manually adjustable windshield and dashboard showing pretty much everything, even the level of lever heating if you like. Additional? Engine guard, propeller shaft guard, oil sump guard, side shrouds, tank bag, preparation for Tom-Tom navigation system installation, steering wheel heating, alarm and additional high beam.

The Stelvio will not disappoint fans of enduro travel. More! I dare say that anyone like me who would try it in the idyllic countryside of Tuscany would want it. Not because I would stand out from my competitors, but because I could live even more strongly the myth of the mighty Italian flying eagle - the myth of the Moto Guzzi.
