Moto Guzzi V7 III and V9 2017 test - Road test

The new generation V7 has been updated more on the inside than on the outside. Small news also for V9

Let's start with the fact: Moto Guzzi V7 This is the Piaggio Group's favorite bicycle by Italians. In fact, it has been the company's bestseller since 2009 and is the starter bike in the Moto Guzzi world. It's deeply updated for 2017 without compromising its essential characteristics and leaving almost intact the classic and elegant look that has always characterized all V7 models. It got a new Euro 4 engine, small aesthetic details, an improved chassis and is always available in versions. Stone, Special e Racerto which a limited edition (1000 pieces) has been added anniversary which marks the 50th anniversary of the first V7. It reaches a wide and diverse audience and is therefore also available in a weakened version for an A2 driver's license. I tested it near Mandello del Lario to reveal its strengths and weaknesses, driving a few kilometers even with the 2017 versions. V9 Bobber and the Tramp, today is more convenient than before.

Moto Guzzi V7 III, how it is made

An important change in the Moto Guzzi company is related to the improvement of the numbering in Roman characters. That's why when we talk about V7III before us is a new generation, and not a simple restyling, as some might think. As expected, the stylistic personality of the model remains unchanged, with design it is a dialogue between shapes inspired by the history of Moto Guzzi and the needs of a modern motorcycle. However, there are new twin-pipe exhaust manifolds and new engine heads. The aluminum filler cap is no longer flush with the tank line, but with a screw and, as before, is equipped with a lock. We also find redesigned nozzle caps, slimmer side panels and a new seat with graphic and new covers dedicated to each of the models. Also new are the direction indicators, mirrors enlarged by 40 mm for increased visibility, and instruments. IN frame it is made of steel, it retains the twin leg arrangements of the previous model and the same weight distribution (46% at the front; 54% at the rear), but the front has been completely redesigned and reinforced, and new steering geometry has been introduced.

New - a pair of shock absorbers. Kayaba adjustable by spring preload, while the fork remains the same: hydraulic telescopic with a diameter of 40 mm. The saddle is lower (770 mm), new aluminum footpegs are installed, the passenger footpegs are rearranged, a new rear brake pump with an integrated reservoir stands out. IN two-cylinder engine (from 744cc) the transverse V - unique in the world - has been redesigned in all its internal components and is now homologated Euro 4... The maximum power currently being reached is increasing 52 CV at 6.200 weights / minand the maximum torque is 60 Nm at 4.900 rpm. There is also a new dry single plate clutch and changes the gear ratios of the first and sixth gears of the six-speed manual transmission. Finally, the V7 III electronic unit takes advantage of the two-channel ABS from Continental and the new. MGCT (Moto Guzzi Traction Control) is adjustable in three levels and can be turned off. The Stone model has a curb weight of about 209 kg, while the Special / Anniversary models have a curb weight of 213 kg.

Moto Guzzi V7 III Stone, Special, Racer and Anniversary models and prices

La Stone (from 7.990 euros) is the basic model, and the most eclectic one at that. It offers a matte finish and is the only spoked wheel and dashboard with a single round dial. There Special (from 8.450 euros) is the one that best embodies the spirit of the original model. It is the most elegant, with numerous chrome details in a classic style. It includes spoked wheels, a double circle tool and an old school embroidered saddle. There Racer (from 10.990 7 euros) is produced in a numbered edition and is a sporty interpretation of the V7 III. It has half handlebars, a (fake) single seat, black anodized aluminum elements, a license plate, red frame, adjustable rear kits, and Ohlins shocks in the back. VXNUMX III completes the circle anniversary (from 11.090 1000 euros), a special edition limited to 50 pieces, dedicated to the 7th anniversary of the birth of VXNUMX. It has special graphics, chrome tank, genuine leather saddle and brushed aluminum fenders.

Moto Guzzi V7 III: how are you

Until it shines, new Moto Guzzi V7III it can be considered suitable for any type of motorcyclist: from the most experienced to the beginner (it is no coincidence that Moto Guzzi offered it in a weakened version as well). You may feel some vibration in the footpegs and handlebars in the saddle, but this easily intuitive and also relatively flexible. This is not a bike designed for fast riding, but at the same time, it can be a lot of fun on twisty routes. It has natural driving, comfortable, with a soft and reasonably low saddle: allows everyone to comfortably rest their feet on the ground. The two-cylinder engine gives a decisive signal at medium and low revs, it pushes vigorously without frightening those with no experience.

The clutch is soft and the gear shifting is fairly precise. Braking is normal, not aggressive. The setup is quite soft and allows the bike to follow the roughness of the asphalt well. Another speech for Racer, which suggests a more congested forward position of the rider, but less extreme than in the past. It has undercut stiffer, which promotes sporty driving and slightly reduces comfort. In short, it was created for those who love the style of the cafe racer. He has a unique personality and is (objectively) very handsome to look at. However, of all, I prefer Stone, because in the end it is the simplest and most important: no frills, only necessary, just enough to enjoy a landscape on a bike that differs from others in terms of history, prestige. , value. and charm.

Moto Guzzi V9 Bobber and Roamer 2017

In versions 2017 Moto Guzzi V7 Roamer and Bobber change the driver's position and improve comfort. This result is due to the change in the position of the footrests: they are now 10 cm back and 35 mm raised. Consequently positionrelaxed and ideal for all riders (before the tallest could hit the cylinder head with their feet), and comfortthanks to the use of a new, softer and softer saddle. Otherwise, everything has remained unchanged, from the engine to the chassis. You can find our road test of the previous model here.
