Motorcyclists. How to take care of security?

Motorcyclists. How to take care of security? With the onset of spring, motorcycles and scooters appear on the streets. Users of such vehicles are particularly at risk of accidents, since in the event of a collision they have little to no protection other than a helmet.

You drive a motorcycle differently than you drive a car. Such cars are easier to brake and can sometimes brake without turning on the brake lights, which sometimes surprises car drivers. In 2018, 313 people died on Polish roads while riding motorcycles and mopeds. What can drivers and motorcyclists do to prevent this from happening?

Drivers and passengers of motorcycles and mopeds accounted for more than 10% of all road traffic accidents in 2018. More than half of the accidents in which motorcyclists or their passengers were injured were caused by other road users, especially car drivers.

What should drivers pay attention to?

To prevent accidents involving two-wheelers, car drivers should first of all be aware that motorcycles and mopeds are different from cars in many ways.

“Because of the small size and maneuverability of two-wheelers, it is more difficult to estimate the distance between us and the speed at which they are approaching. Therefore, car drivers should be especially careful with oncoming motorcycles or scooters, turning left at an intersection, and when changing lanes, as these vehicles may be in our blind spot. Zbigniew Veseli, director of the Renault Safe Driving School, says.

It is also very important to keep a safe distance. Motorcycles slow down much faster than cars. Therefore, it is possible that the driver will slow down (for example, in a corner) without using the brake, but only by downshifting. In this case, the brake lights will not turn on, which can confuse the driver of the car following him. Maintaining a sufficient distance from the vehicle in front will allow you to react quickly enough.

Helmet and special clothing

Users of motorcycles and mopeds themselves should take care of their safety. Like car drivers, they must exercise caution and apply the principle of limited trust to other road users. It is also important to move at the correct speed and signal maneuvers.

In addition, due to the fact that in the event of a collision the rider is not protected by belts, airbags or curtains, the right equipment is key. You can't do without a helmet even on a short trip. The safety of motorcyclists is also enhanced by the use of appropriate protective clothing. This can prevent or minimize the severity of injuries.
