Like every year, the end of August means the return from vacation. Increased traffic, rushing drivers due to last-minute returns, reduced concentration and, paradoxically, very good road conditions are responsible for a large number of accidents and collisions during this period.
Most accidents occur during the holiday months. Last year, only in July and August there were 6603 road accidents*. “This is due, on the one hand, to the increase in traffic associated with leisure trips, and on the other hand, to weather conditions, which, paradoxically, the better, the more dangerous,” says Zbigniew Veseli, director of Renault. In good weather conditions, drivers feel more comfortable driving and reach higher speeds. Then the risk of accidents is much greater, and statistics confirm that speeding is consistently the most common cause of accidents*. What can I do to make my return from vacation safe?
We usually make the most of our vacation days and head back as late as possible. At the same time, we forget about trip planning - route, hours, stops. As a result, we often spend a lot of time in traffic jams and arrive home much later than we planned. After driving for a long time, drivers usually feel discomfort, nervousness, fatigue, drowsiness, which causes a drop in concentration and an increase in reaction time. – When traveling long distances, it is best if the car is driven alternately by two drivers. There are also important stops every 2-3 hours that allow you to take a break from the monotony of driving for a moment. Remember not to eat heavy meals during the route and immediately before it, because this increases the feeling of drowsiness, say the coaches of the Renault Driving School.
Before heading back, let's carefully check if the car is in good condition - if the lights are on, the wipers work without problems, if the fluid level is normal and if the wheels are inflated. The good condition of the driver and vehicle is crucial for comfortable driving and safety when returning from vacation.
