Can a damaged crash bar be repaired?
No well-made rod should snap or break, but the metal the rods are made of can bend or twist with prolonged use.If you're particularly concerned about the life of your rod, it might be worth investing in one made from spring steel, which is easier to reform than other metals. For more information, see: What are the rods made of?
What to do if your rod is bent or twisted
Straightening a bent rod is not an easy task and should not be taken lightly - it is a job that requires a high level of skill.Wonkee Donkee does not recommend that you try to straighten the collapse beam yourself. This type of rod is simply not strong enough to withstand the high force required to repair a bent rod, and you're more likely to break your tool than fix it.A professional locksmith can repair your bar. However, since breaker bars are generally inexpensive, it may be wiser to buy a replacement unless you need to repair one of the more expensive varieties, such as an adjustable breaker bar. Please note:
Don't heat your rod to make it malleable - that will permanently soften the metal. Similarly, heating and then quenching the metal (dousing it with cold water) can cause it to solidify too quickly and become brittle.
