What affects the length of seat belts in a car
Only happy parents would think of measuring the length of the seat belt in their car when buying a child seat or car seat for their child. Nothing is said about this either in the section “Requirements for seat belts and places for their fastening” of the technical regulation of the Customs Union “On the safety of wheeled vehicles”, or in UNECE Regulation N 16 (GOST R 41.16-2005) “Uniform regulations regarding belts safety and restraint systems for passengers and drivers”, nor in other regulations. So in fact, this value is set at the discretion of manufacturers, who, as a rule, always tend to save.
As a result, in addition to the aforementioned parents who bought a car seat of a large size, which cannot be fastened due to a short seat belt, drivers and passengers of non-standard sizes also suffer. Alas, both are not uncommon, although the rest of the majority of car owners do not think about this topic at all.
The living experience of a large driver indicates that most often Chinese car builders save on the length of the seat belt. In second place, the Japanese auto industry is prone to close samurai hugs.
And most likely, this is not about saving, but about relying on the average constitution of the Japanese, who have never been distinguished by their outstanding dimensions. Still, sumo wrestlers do not count, since such giants are an exception in the Land of the Rising Sun.
Least of all, European brands are noticed in saving on belts. But, oddly enough, even among the cult "Americans", in whose homeland most people are overweight, there are instances with a very short seat belt.
And we are talking about such a heavyweight as the Chevrolet Tahoe, where it will not be easy for an obese person to buckle up. I would like to believe that this phenomenon is typical only for the Russian market.
However, anyone who encounters such a problem can quickly solve it by buying a seat belt extension, which is offered on the Web in a variety of types and colors for at least 1000 rubles. As for the effect of the length of the belt on the safety of the fastened person, then you should not worry about it, because there is no direct relationship between the indicated parameters. It is no coincidence that, as mentioned above, the standards are silent about its size.
The main role in this function is played by an inertial coil with a return and lock mechanism, which, in the event of a collision with a car, fixes the belt in a stationary state. In more expensive models, a tensioner (or pretensioner) is installed, which, if necessary, fixes the human body due to the reverse winding of the belt and its tighter tightening.
