Malfunctions and replacement of brake pads VAZ 2106
Brake pads on the VAZ 2106 do not have to be changed so often, and the frequency of replacement directly depends on the quality of the parts used and the driving style. To carry out work, it is not necessary to contact the service station, because this simple procedure can be performed independently.
Brake pads VAZ 2106
The braking system ensures the safety of the vehicle. One of the main components of this system is the brake pads. Braking efficiency depends on their reliability and quality. The pads have a certain resource, so it is necessary to periodically check and replace them.
What are they for
When you press the brake pedal, the pressure in the hydraulic system increases and the pads are pressed against the surface of the brake disc or drum. Structurally, a brake shoe is a plate on which an overlay made of a special material is fixed. It contains various components: special rubbers and resins, ceramics, fibers based on synthetics. The composition may vary depending on the manufacturer. The main requirements that the lining must meet are high wear resistance and the ability to withstand high temperatures, resistance to damage, but at the same time the material must cause minimal wear on the brake disc.
What are the
On the VAZ 2106, like on the other "classic", disc brakes are installed in front, and drum brakes in the back.
front brakes
The front end braking system is as follows:
- A brake disc is attached to the hub.
- The caliper is fixed to the suspension knuckle and holds two working cylinders.
- The brake pads are located between the disc and the cylinders.
When you press the brake pedal, the pistons move out of the cylinders, press on the pads and clamp the brake disc together. As a result, the car gradually slows down. The more force is applied to the brake pedal, the more the pads grip the disc.
The front brake pads are flat and smaller than the rear ones.
Rear brakes
Drum brakes on the VAZ 2106 consist of the drum itself, two shoes, a hydraulic cylinder and springs located under the drum. The pads of the pads are fixed with rivets or adhesive. The lower part of the pad rests against the supports, and the upper part against the pistons of the cylinder. Inside the drum, they are pulled together by means of a spring. For free rotation of the wheel, when stopping the car is not required, there is a gap between the pads and the drum.
When the driver presses the brake pedal, fluid is supplied to the working cylinder, which leads to a divergence of the pads. They rest against the drum, thereby causing a slowdown in the rotation of the wheel.
Which is better
Zhiguli owners often face the issue of choosing brake pads. The modern auto parts market offers products from different manufacturers. Parts differ in both quality and cost. The brake pads of the following brands can be installed on VAZ cars:
- Ferodo (Great Britain). The best brake products you can find on the automotive aftermarket today. Products are of high quality because they are made of reliable materials.Ferodo pads are high quality and the best choice on the market today
- DAfmi (Ukraine, Australia). They have good technical characteristics, but are cheaper than advertised brands. The service life is identical to the previous version.
- ATE (Germany). The products of this company are popular all over the world. Brake pads stand out for their reliability and durability.
- Rona and Rounulds (Hungary, Denmark). Manufacturers, although less well-known, but their technical characteristics are not inferior to the leaders in the market.
- AvtoVAZ. According to the main characteristics (braking efficiency, resource, effect on the brake disc), the pads are no worse than imported analogues, and the probability of getting a fake is much lower.Factory pads are not inferior to imported analogues in terms of technical characteristics, and the probability of buying a fake is much lower
Prices for brake pads on the VAZ 2106 start at 350 rubles. (AvtoVAZ) and reach 1700 r. (ATE).
Brake pad failures
The characteristic signs of problems with the pads are:
- sounds unusual for the operation of the brakes (creaking, squealing, grinding);
- skidding of the car during braking;
- the need to apply more force to the brake pedal;
- black or metal dust on wheels;
- increased deceleration time;
- the pedal does not return to its original position when released.
Screeching
Brake pads must be changed when the thickness of the friction material reaches 1,5 mm. If this is not done, a rattle (squeal) will appear. In addition, such sounds may be present when installing low-quality pads.
Shock when braking
The appearance of shocks during braking can be caused both by the condition of the pads themselves, and by a damaged surface of the brake disc or drum, soured pistons in the cylinders, or other malfunctions. To identify the problem, you will need to disassemble the brake mechanism and carefully inspect the parts for wear and damage.
Car skid
There can be many reasons for skidding - this is a strong wear of the pads, and damage to the discs, and a loose caliper mount or suspension failure.

Hard or soft pedal
If you notice that the pedal has become unusually tight or, conversely, soft, then most likely the pads have become unusable and will have to be replaced. Additionally, it is worth inspecting the hoses that supply fluid to the brake cylinders, and the cylinders themselves. If the piston sticks in them, then the problem with the stiffness of the pedal may also appear because of this.
The appearance of a plaque
Plaque can appear both with poor quality pads, which leads to their rapid abrasion, and with normal parts. However, in the second case, it should be minimal. Dust can also appear during aggressive driving, i.e. during sudden starts and braking.
Stuck pedals
If the brake pedal does not move back when pressed, this indicates that the pad is sticking to the disc. Such a phenomenon is possible in frosty weather when moisture gets on the brake elements, but it will be useful to inspect the pads. If the car cannot be stopped for a long time when pressing the pedal, then the reason lies in worn pads or air ingress into the hydraulic system. You will need to inspect the brake elements and, possibly, pump the brakes.
Replacing the front pads
The need to replace the brake pads on the VAZ 2106 arises when they are worn out or damaged due to the use of low quality parts. If you don’t drive a car, then you can drive about 50 thousand km on high-quality pads. However, there are situations when the part must be replaced after 5 thousand km. To replace the front pads on the "six" you need to prepare the following list of tools:
- key "balloon";
- mounting blade;
- calipers;
- beard;
- passages;
- new pads;
- a hammer;
- file.The beard is convenient to knock out the pins when removing the brake pads
The front wheels of the car for repairs are hung on a lift or lifted with a jack.
Withdrawal
The procedure for removing old pads is as follows:
- We unscrew the bolts and remove the wheel.To remove the wheel, unscrew the 4 bolts with a balloon
- We clean the brake mechanism from dirt.
- We apply grease to the places where the fingers enter the cylinders.Apply penetrating lubricant to the fingers holding the pads.
- Take out 2 pins.Remove 2 pins with pliers
- We knock out the fingers with the help of a tip and a hammer, or squeeze them out with a beard or a screwdriver (if they come out easily).Fingers are squeezed out with a screwdriver or beard
- Remove spring washers.Remove spring washers by hand.
- We take out the brake pads, first the outer, and then the inner.We take out worn pads from their seats
Installation
The assembly procedure consists of the following steps:
- We wipe the cylinders with a rag in the place of contact with the pads.
- We examine the anthers for rupture. If there is damage, we change the protective element.Before assembling the mechanism, inspect the anther for damage
- We measure the thickness of the brake disc with a caliper. To do this, we grind the shoulder with a file on both sides of the disk in several places. The value must be at least 9 mm. Otherwise, the disk must be replaced.Checking the thickness of the brake disc
- Through the spacer with a mounting blade, we press the pistons one by one into the cylinders. This will allow you to easily install new pads.In order for the new pads to fit into place without problems, we press the pistons of the cylinders with a mounting spatula
- We install the pads of the elements in the reverse order, after which we get into the car and press the brake pedal several times, which will allow the pistons and pads to fall into place.

Replacing the rear pads
Brake elements front and rear wear unevenly. Therefore, the rear pads are changed much less frequently. However, it is not worth delaying the repair, since both the braking efficiency and the holding of the car when put on the handbrake directly depend on the state of the pads.
To carry out the procedure, you need to prepare the following tools:
- screwdriver with a flat and cross blade;
- pliers;
- long nose pliers;
- "balloon".Long-nose pliers make it easy to hold small parts in hard-to-reach places
How to remove the brake drum
We dismantle the part in the following sequence:
- Hang the back of the car and remove the wheel.
- We turn off the guide pins.The drum on the axle shaft is held by two studs, unscrew them
- Lightly tap on the edge of the drum from the back using a wooden block. It is not necessary to knock with a hammer without a guide, as the edge of the product may break off.We knock down the drum by striking through a wooden tip
- Often the brake drum cannot be removed, so we twist the studs into the technical holes.Sometimes, to remove the brake drum, you need to screw the studs into special holes and wring it out of the shield
- Pull the drum off the hub.Screwed in the pins, dismantle the drum
Removing the pads
We dismantle the pads in this order:
- Remove the spring-loaded bolts holding the brake elements.The pads are pressed against the brake shield with spring bolts, remove them
- Use a screwdriver to tighten the lower spring.We tighten the spring from below, with which the pads are pressed against each other
- We move the block and dismantle the spacer bar.Pushing the block aside, remove the spacer bar
- We tighten the spring that holds the pads in the upper part of the mechanism.The pads are pressed against the pistons of the cylinders by a spring, which also needs to be removed.
- Disconnect the lever from the tip of the handbrake cable.Disconnect the lever from the tip of the handbrake cable
- We take out the cotter pin holding the handbrake lever.We take out the cotter pin holding the handbrake lever
- We dismantle the lever, pin and washer from the block.After removing the cotter pin, take out the finger and disconnect the lever from the block

Installation of pads and drum
The brake elements are installed in place in reverse order. Before putting the drum on the axle shaft, you need to clean it from the inside from corrosion and dirt, for example, with a metal brush. It should also be noted that with new pads, the drum may not sit in its place. Therefore, you will have to slightly release the tension of the handbrake cable. When the drums are installed on both sides, you need to adjust the handbrake.
For some time after replacing the pads, it is not recommended to brake sharply, as they must get used to the drums.
When replacing pads, it is also recommended to check other elements of the brake system and suspension. Brake hoses must not show any visible damage or leaks. Pads are only changed as a set. Otherwise, the car will be pulled to the side after repair.
