New Volkswagen e-Up (2020) – eMobly review: lively, good value, compact

The German portal eMobly has carried out a quick test of the VW e-Up (2020). The small city car (segment A) can hardly be called enthusiastic, but the new e-Up was considered a living car with good value for money. The cost of VW e-Up in Poland starts at PLN 96.

As the journalists of the portal report, the car is difficult to distinguish from the previous version, since the biggest change is the increased battery capacity (32,3 kWh) and the built-in 7,2 kW charger. The new VW e-Up can be equipped with a CCS fast charging socket, but there is an additional charge of 600 EUR (in Poland: 2 PLN).

Like the previous generation VW e-Golf and e-Up, Volkswagen's electric toddler doesn't have active battery cooling. eMobly speculates that this could lead to slower downloads over time, but it's hard to say on what basis these conclusions were drawn (source). While they seem logical, it should be remembered that the charging deceleration in the e-Golf is not yet noticeable:

Interior and equipment

Counters are analog, but transparent. The space in front allows you to travel relatively comfortably, and the back is a bit crowded - they can drive relatively comfortably at a height of up to 1,6 meters. The panels don't fit very well, the car will creak here and there.

The vehicle comes standard with a lane departure warning system, two front speakers, a USB port for charging your phone, a 230 V socket and a phone dock.

Driving experience

The new VW e-Up is a driving pleasure with just 61 kW (83 hp) and 210 Nm of torque. The other side turned out sound generatorwhich was included in the e-Up equipment and simulated that we are driving an internal combustion vehicle. The eMobly editors haven't found a way to turn it off - thankfully it's an optional feature.

> The price of the Peugeot e-208 with a surcharge is PLN 87. What do we get in this cheapest version? [WE WILL CHECK]

On the highway 15 degrees Celsius power consumption was 18,9 kWh / 100 km (189 Wh / km), which corresponds to the maximum flight range of the VW e-Up (2020) of about 170 kilometers. In the city, values ranged from 12 to 14 kWh (120-140 Wh / km), which is in line with the manufacturer's promise (260 km WLTP). At temperatures close to zero, the values will be lower.

According to eMobly, a car can easily cover 400-500 kilometers a day, although it will certainly be more convenient to drive on routes within the allowable range of a car - for example, up to 100 kilometers one way. This is a significant jump over its predecessor, which struggled to cover 100 kilometers on a single charge.

Summation

The new Volkswagen e-Up was recognized as a step in the right direction. A solid assortment at a reasonable price in Germany and a surcharge mechanism make the purchase of a municipal electrician reasonable.
