OBD-II DTC Datasheet

Engine Position System Performance Bank 2

What does this mean?

This Diagnostic Trouble Code (DTC) is a generic transmission code, which means it applies to OBD-II equipped vehicles including but not limited to Cadillac, GMC, etc.

Although general, specific repair steps may differ depending on the brand / model.

This source has a good description of this P0009 code:

The engine control module (ECM) checks for misalignment between both camshafts on the same row of the engine and the crankshaft. The misalignment can be at the intermediate sprocket for each bank or at the crankshaft. Once the ECM knows the position of both camshafts on the same row of the engine, the ECM compares the readings with the reference value. The ECM will set a DTC if both readings for the same engine row exceed a calibrated threshold in the same direction.

The code is more common for the following brands: Suzuki, GM, Cadillac, Buick, Holden. In fact, there are service bulletins for some GM vehicles and the fix is to replace the timing chains (including engines like 3.6 LY7, 3.6 LLT or 2.8 LP1). You can also see this DTC in the vehicle, which also has other associated DTCs such as P0008, P0016, P0017, P0018 and P0019. Bank 2 refers to the side of the engine that does not contain cylinder # 1. Most likely, you will not see only this code, at the same time you will have the P0008 code set.

symptoms

Symptoms of a P0009 trouble code may include:

  • MIL Illumination (Malfunction Indicator Lamp)
  • Roughness during acceleration
  • Poor fuel economy
  • Reduced power
  • Timing chain "noise"

Possible reasons

Possible causes of a P0009 code may include:

  • Extend Timing Chain
  • The crankshaft rotor wheel has moved and is no longer top dead center (TDC).
  • Timing Chain Tensioner Problem

Possible solutions

If your vehicle is new enough and still has a transmission warranty, be sure to let your dealer repair it. Typically, diagnosing and clearing this DTC will include checking the drive chains and tensioners for excessive wear or misalignment, and checking the crank reaction wheel is in the correct position. Then replace parts as needed. As stated earlier, there are known issues with some GM engines, so parts may be updated or revised. Please refer to your factory service manual for additional troubleshooting steps specific to your specific vehicle make and model.
