P056B Cruise control, distance reduction signal

OBD-II DTC Datasheet

Signal for decreasing cruise control distance

What does this mean?

This is a generic transmission diagnostic trouble code (DTC) and is commonly applied to OBD-II vehicles equipped with cruise control. This may include but is not limited to Peugeot, Ford, Nissan, Chevrolet, Hyundai, VW, Audi, Citroen, etc. Despite the general nature, the exact repair steps may vary depending on the model year, make, model and transmission configuration. ...

There are many features in the car cruise control option. The operator can not only set a specific vehicle speed and maintain it automatically using numerous sensors, switches, modules and many other components, but you can also change the speed electronically (for example, "set -" and "resume +"), temporarily change speed while maintaining the previous speed (eg passing cars, unexpected stop / slowdown), among others.

Considering the fact that most of the functions mentioned in the description of P056B and related codes (P0565, P0566, P0567, P0568, P0570, etc.) are contained in one switch / component, find the mechanical inputs (i.e. buttons , switches, negotiation, etc.) are involved. That being said, some of the common names of the components mentioned are: multifunction switch, steering wheel controls, cruise control switch, cruise control module, accessory switch, etc.

In the event of this code, it is the ECM (engine control module) that has detected malfunction (s) in the signal circuit. Simply put, something went wrong in the schema of the function mentioned in the description.

When the ECM detects a signal malfunction in one or more of the many cruise control functions, it activates the CEL (Check Engine Light) using P056B and / or related codes. Most likely, the use of the specified function will be disabled and / or will work abnormally.

P056B is set when the ECM detects a malfunction in the Adaptive Cruise Control (ACC) DISTANCE DISTANCE signal.

NOTE. ACC systems are not only complex in design, but also require special tools and / or diagnostic procedures to adequately correct any existing malfunction.

What is the severity of this DTC?

The severity is considered to be moderately low. Even if you lose all cruise control functionality, you can still get back to work safely. As for further damage, if left unattended, it will be that rare occasion where you can be neglected if, say, your car is old and you can live without a cruise, or you cannot afford to fix the car.

That being said, it is possible that neglecting ANY electrical problem for a long time could result in further damage.

What are some of the symptoms of the code?

Symptoms of a P056B trouble code may include:

  • The cruise control indicator on the dashboard is off or on
  • Cruise control is not working
  • Can't tune cruise control to desired speed or speed is unstable
  • Certain functions in the cruise control system do not work (e.g. resume, set, +, -, coast, accelerate)
  • Commands are not working stably

What are some of the common causes for the code?

Reasons for this P056B code may include:

  • Cruise control switch or buttons inside the switch are defective and / or damaged
  • Connector (s) does not provide proper and efficient electrical connection
  • The wires in the cruise control harness are worn and / or damaged resulting in a short circuit, open circuit, resistance, etc.
  • The cruise control switch block is contaminated with liquid (such as coffee, soda, juice, etc.)
  • ECM problem
  • Defective cruise control module
  • Problem with BCM (Body Control Module)
  • Overheated parts causing a malfunction

What are some steps to troubleshoot the P056B?

Basic step # 1

The first thing I would do here is visually inspect the cruise control switch / module. Sometimes the buttons are missing, the stake is stuck in one position, the buttons are loose and don't connect properly. When doing so, make sure that the cruise control buttons move freely and are not contaminated with potentially hazardous particles and / or dirt. You will also want to record ALL malfunctions or deviations from the cruise function.

Basic step # 2

Does the cruise control indicator on the instrument cluster come on when manually engaging the cruise control? If not, you can check if there is a fuse in the circuit. This information should be found in the owner's manual for the brand and model. Replace any blown fuses with new ones approved by the manufacturer.

Basic step # 3

To access the cruise control switch / module harness, you usually need to remove some parts of the dashboard (for example, the steering column shroud, the steering wheel airbag module, etc.). To pinpoint the specific wire associated with the fault, you will definitely need the right wire harness for your vehicle. They vary considerably for many reasons. Always get the correct proprietary information BEFORE taking too aggressive action.

Basic step # 4

It is recommended that you ensure that your ABS (Anti-lock Braking System) system is in good working order and that the ABS indicator on the dashboard is off. ABS uses numerous sensors, including speed sensors, which, in the event of a malfunction, can trick computers into thinking that the car is moving faster or slower than the actual speed.
