P0606 PCM / ECM Processor Malfunction

Datasheet P0606 OBD-II DTC

PCM / ECM processor error

What does this mean?

This Diagnostic Trouble Code (DTC) is a generic transmission code, which means it applies to OBD-II equipped vehicles. Although general, specific repair steps may differ depending on the brand / model.

This code is pretty straightforward. This basically means that the PCM / ECM (Powertrain / Engine Control Module) has detected an internal integrity error in the PCM.

When this code is activated, it should store freeze frame data, which helps someone with an advanced code scan tool to get information about exactly what was happening to the vehicle when the P0606 code was triggered.

Symptoms of error P0606

Chances are the only symptom of DTC P0606 is the "Check Engine Light" known as MIL (Malfunction Indicator Light) comes on.

  • Make sure the engine light is on
  • Anti-lock brake light (ABS) on
  • Vehicle may stall or move erratically
  • Vehicle may stall when stopped
  • Your vehicle may be showing incorrect symptoms
  • Increased fuel consumption
  • Although rare, symptoms may not be felt

Causes

In all likelihood, the PCM / ECM is out of order.

  • Damaged, corroded and/or worn PCM wires
  • Broken, corroded and/or worn PCM connectors
  • Faulty PCM ground circuits and/or output devices
  • Controller Area Network (CAN) communication failure

Possible Solutions P0606

As a vehicle owner, there is little you can do to fix this code. The most common fix for a P0606 code is to replace the PCM, although in some cases, flashing the PCM again with updated software can fix this. Be sure to check for TSB on your vehicle (Technical Service Bulletins).

Apparently the fix is to replace the PCM. This is usually not a do-it-yourself task, although it may be in some cases. We strongly recommend that you go to a qualified repair shop / technician who can reprogram your new PCM. Installing a new PCM may involve using special tools to program the vehicle's VIN (Vehicle Identification Number) and / or anti-theft information (PATS, etc.).

NOTE. This repair may be covered by an emissions warranty, so be sure to check with your dealer as it may be covered beyond the warranty period between bumpers or transmission.

Other PCM DTCs: P0600, P0601, P0602, P0603, P0604, P0605, P0607, P0608, P0609, P0610.

HOW DOES A MECHANIC DIAGNOSTIC CODE P0606?

  • Obtain freeze frame data with an OBD-II scanner. This will provide information about when the code was set by the PCM, as well as what may have caused the code to be stored.
  • Visually inspect the wiring and connectors leading to the PCM for breaks, frayed harnesses, and corroded connectors.
  • Repair the system after repairing or replacing damaged cables or connectors. Most likely the PCM will need to be replaced and/or reprogrammed.
  • Check with the dealer if there are any recalls or if the PCM can be replaced under the emissions warranty.

COMMON ERRORS WHEN DIAGNOSING CODE P0606

DTC P0606 is difficult to misdiagnose; this is quite simple and usually indicates that the PCM needs to be replaced and/or reprogrammed.

However, some of the symptoms overlap with those of mechanical problems. As a result, the ignition system and/or fuel system components are often repaired by mistake.

HOW SERIOUS CODE P0606 IS?

The PCM controls and manages the vehicle's engine and electrical system. The vehicle will not be able to run without a properly functioning PCM. For this reason, this code can be considered one of the most serious codes.

WHAT REPAIRS CAN FIX CODE P0606?

  • Repair or replace broken and/or worn threads.
  • Repair or replacement of broken and/or corroded connectors
  • Repair or replace faulty PCM ground loops
  • Replacing or reprogramming the PCM

ADDITIONAL COMMENTS TO BE AWARE OF CODE P0606

It is important to remember that the symptoms of a faulty PCM can be the same as a faulty mechanical system. DTC P0606 is simple and straightforward. However, the PCM may need to be replaced or reprogrammed at the dealership.

When the code P0606 comes up, it will be when driving for the first time after being parked for a long time. When first driving, there are often jerks, the engine shakes, and the car lacks power. You have to park on the side of the road. If the engine is in D gear position, the engine will be short enough to shift into N gear and the engine will be normal. Had to turn off the engine for 5 minutes and then restart it. The above symptoms disappeared, leaving only the engine light showing. Driving normally as before
