P0730 Incorrect gear ratio

OBD-II Trouble Code - P0730 - Data Sheet

P0730 - Wrong gear ratio

This Diagnostic Trouble Code (DTC) is a generic OBD-II transmission code. It is considered universal as it applies to all makes and models of cars (1996 and newer), although specific repair steps may differ depending on the model.

Code P0730 indicates that your automatic transmission has an incorrect gear ratio. The "gear ratio" is related to how the torque converter works and basically it indicates that there is a difference between the input RPM speed and the output gear RPM. This indicates that somewhere in the torque converter there is a problem with the way the gears fit together.

What does trouble code P0730 mean?

In modern vehicles equipped with automatic / transaxle transmissions, a torque converter is used between the engine and the transmission to increase the engine's output torque and drive the rear wheels.

This code can be displayed on vehicles with automatic transmission when there is a problem with shifting or engaging any gear, this code is general and does not specifically indicate any specific gear ratio failure. A computer controlled automatic transmission uses multiple gear ratios to increase vehicle speed while maximizing engine power output. Newer vehicles can have more than four gear ratios to improve fuel economy. The computer determines when to shift between up or down gears, depending on the throttle position in relation to the vehicle speed.

The engine control module (ECM), powertrain control module (PCM), or powertrain control module (TCM) uses input from various sensors to verify that the transmission and its components are working properly. Engine speed is often calculated from a transmission speed sensor to determine gear ratio and torque converter slip. If the calculation is not the desired value, a DTC sets and the check engine light comes on. Incorrect ratio codes usually require advanced mechanical ability and diagnostic tools.

Note. This code is similar to P0729, P0731, P0732, P0733, P0734, P0735 and P0736. If there are other transmission codes, first resolve those issues before proceeding with the wrong gear ratio code.

Symptoms

The first thing you should expect is that engine check indicator should light up. This is a transmission related issue, which means that it can negatively affect your ability to drive. You may notice transmission slippage and general transmission problems such as being stuck in low gear for too long or in high gear for so long that the engine stalls. You may also notice problems with fuel consumption.

Symptoms of a P0730 trouble code may include:

  • Check Engine Light (Malfunction Indicator Lamp) is on
  • Delayed shifting or shifting into the wrong gear
  • Slipping transmission
  • Loss of fuel economy

Possible Causes of Code P0730

There are actually many potential causes for the P0730 code. For example, you may see this code due to low or dirty fluid problems in the transmission, problems with mechanical components, a clogged internal fluid line, a general clutch problem in the torque converter, or problems with the shift solenoids. Basically, while the problem is usually with the transmission or torque converter, the variety of problems can be surprising.

Reasons for this DTC may include:

  • Low or dirty transmission fluid
  • Worn pump or clogged fluid filter
  • Torque Converter Clutch, Solenoid, or Internal Lockup
  • Mechanical failure inside the transmission
  • Internal blocking in the main transmission control unit
  • Defective shift solenoids or wiring
  • Defective transmission control module

Diagnostic and repair stages

Always check the fluid level and condition before proceeding with further diagnostics. An incorrect fluid level or dirty fluid can cause shifting problems that affect multiple gears.

The torque converter stopping speed test can be performed according to the manufacturer's recommendations. Consult your service manual before proceeding with the test. If the engine speed is not within factory specifications, the problem may be with the torque converter or an internal transmission problem. This may be the reason that several incorrect ratio codes are displayed in addition to P0730.

The torque converter clutch, inner clutches and bands are usually controlled by a fluid pressure solenoid. If there is an electrical problem with the solenoid, a code related to that fault should also be displayed. Repair the electrical problem before proceeding. A blocked fluid passage inside the transmission can also trigger a P0730. If there are multiple incorrect gear ratio codes but the transmission is operating as expected, there may be mechanical problems with the torque converter, main transmission control, or pressure problems.

It may be necessary to use a scan tool to determine which gear is being controlled by the transmission and determine if the engine speed matches the calculated output speed from the transmission sensor.

Troubleshooting these types of faults often requires in-depth knowledge of transmission and overhaul operations. Consult the factory service manual for vehicle specific diagnostic procedures.

How serious is the P0730 code?

Code P0730 can quickly become incredibly serious. This is because it is related to the transmission, which is an important part of the functioning of the entire car. Although it doesn't usually start very badly, it progresses quickly, potentially harming your car as a whole. Also, this is a generic code just indicating a gear ratio issue, so the issue itself could be anything from a minor issue to a major issue.

Can I still drive with code P0730?

It is not recommended to drive with code P0730. These codes can quickly escalate into something much more serious, and the last thing you want is to run into a major transmission problem while driving on the freeway. Instead, most experts recommend that if you encounter a P0730 code, you should take your vehicle to an expert as soon as possible to have the problem diagnosed and fixed.

How hard is it to check code P0730?

The process of checking code P0730 can be very tricky because the transmission is an integral part of the engine. It can be difficult for newbies in the field of car DIY to look into such an important part of their own engine and make sure they can install it back. If you get this error code, you can leave the review process to the experts so you don't have to worry about accidentally messing something up or not being able to spot the problem.

    P0730
You start by slipping and after a while a hard kick. The kit does not work.

hi I have a volvo v60 d4 year 2015 I replaced the automatic transmission aisin 8 ratios the gearbox works at 70% because if I try to accelerate deeply and grumpy it gives me error P073095 and does not allow me to update it someone can help me on what I can being a mechanic tells me that it does not adapt to the engine revs
I ask you if I tried to replace the torque converter that was there before can it return to place?
or you have a solution thanks in advance for your answer
