Falling range in winter? Here is a list of Nissan Leaf, VW e-Golf, Nissan e-NV200 and Chevrolet Bolt / Opel Ampera-e • ELECTRIC CARS

In various discussion forums and Facebook groups, there are statements about reducing the range of an electric vehicle on winter tires at temperatures around 0 degrees Celsius. We decided to collect them in one place and check if there is some kind of rule in all this.

Here is the data collected for different vehicles from different sources. They cannot be directly compared, but they should allow us to evaluate what to expect from winter tires in cold weather. The "actual range" below is the range calculated according to the EPA procedure, but confirmed by numerous tests in mixed driving in good weather:

  • Nissan Leaf: real range = 243 km190-200 kilometers in light frosts (source), i.e. -20 per cent,
  • VW e-Golf: actual range = 201 km, 170-180 km in light frosts (source), i.e. -13 percent,
  • Opel Ampera-e / Chevrolet Bolt: actual range = 383 km280-300 km in light frosts, that is -24 percent
  • Nissan e-NV200 (2016): real range = 115 km, 90 km in light frosts, or -22 percent.

> Bloomberg: Tesla produced ~ 155 3 models. Schmidt: But in Europe the average demand

At first glance, it is clear that with winters, which are most common in Poland, the decline should not exceed 20-25 percent. This would mean that e-Nirowhich, in good conditions, should cover a maximum of 384 km on a single charge, in winter he must cover about 300 kilometers. With a range of 415 km, the Hyundai Kona Electric should easily cover 320 km in winter - and so on.

How to increase winter coverage? For years, the advice has been the same: leave the car connected to the charger until you leave, use seat and steering wheel heaters instead of heating the interior, and don't overdo your driving speed.
