Peugeot 206 XT 1,6

Peugeot designers really liked this option. For most cars, observers disagree on the shape - some like it, others don't. Or leave everything as it is. But with regard to the Peugeot 206, I have not yet heard any other opinion than praise. But only outwardly. All those smooth lines, full of dynamics, unfortunately do not continue inside.

Simply put - the interior is kind of lost because of the shiny black hard plastic. The materials used could have been much better, and the Peugeot designers could also have been more imaginative with a dashboard that is so classic for Peugeot that it looks extremely boring in this car. However, it is transparent and well equipped with sensors.

A chassis is more than just an engine.

The driving position also deserves some criticism. If your height is somewhere under 185 inches and you have a shoe number under 42, you are fine. However, if you exceed these dimensions, problems will arise. We need more longitudinal seat offset and larger pedal spacing.

For people of smaller stature, the distances between the steering wheel, pedals and the gear lever are suitable, and the seats themselves are quite comfortable. And if there are not very many basketball players in the car, then there will be enough space on the back bench, and both everyday purchases and the luggage of a small family on long trips can easily fit in the trunk.

There is plenty of room for small items, but installing electric windshield switches and adjusting outside mirrors is annoying. The switches are located behind the gear lever and are very difficult to find without looking down, especially if you are wearing a longer jacket or coat that covers them. This, of course, is not in favor of driving safety.

In addition to power windows and electrically adjustable rearview mirrors, standard equipment on the XT includes a power and height-adjustable steering wheel, height-adjustable driver's seat, remote-controlled central locking, fog lights, driver and front passenger airbags. and much more. Unfortunately, ABS brakes are not standard equipment, and there is an additional charge for air conditioning.

The test car was equipped with ABS, but the measured stopping distance is not the best of such achievements. But this is due to the large number of winter tires and lower temperatures outside than the brakes themselves.

Overall, the chassis is very powerful, which we are used to with Peugeot cars. The road position is solid, but it also allows sporty drivers to have fun on winding and empty roads. Although the chassis is quite soft and absorbs impact from the wheels, the 206 does not lean too much in corners, allows a little rear wheel play, and always instills confidence in the driver as it reacts predictably and is easy to control.

Thus, the chassis is more than a piece of what is hidden under the hood. It's a 1-litre four-cylinder that doesn't deserve the label of technological gem or the latest in automotive engine technology, but it's a proven and efficient engine.

The fact that there are only two valves above each cylinder, that it is pleasantly flexible at low to medium speeds, and that it starts breathing at higher speeds is a testament to how far its roots stretch. It also communicates this with a slightly louder sound, and its characteristics can be described as average. Since 90 horsepower in an era when modern 1-liter 6-liter engines have 100, 110 or more power, this is not exactly an astronomical number, so the driver is happy with the relatively low fuel consumption, which is also associated with a useful torque curve. allowing laziness when shifting gears.

The gearbox also deserves some improvements. The movements of the gear lever are precise, but too long and, above all, too loud. However, the gear ratios are well calculated, so the car doesn't feel weak either in urban acceleration or at higher highway speeds.

If your height is somewhere under 185 inches and you have a shoe number under 42, you are fine.

So we don't find much of a mechanic displeasure, especially since the 206 is also available in combination with other engines, as well as the feeling of being in a car. And if we add to that the shape, which is undoubtedly this car's greatest asset, then it's no surprise that two hundred and six are still selling like a fresh bun and that they have to wait a long time. Cars with really attractive designs have always attracted buyers.

Otherwise, our test of the silver 206 XT with this record is far from complete. He will stay with us for two years until we have driven a hundred thousand kilometers. At the moment, also due to its form, it is very popular among the members of the editorial board. Well, we're just people too.

evaluation

  • The Peugeot 206 is definitely a good choice in the 1,6-liter version of the XT, especially if you're not too tall and have money for a few more accessories. It is distinguished by a good location on the road and spacious interior. The impression is spoiled by the hard inner plastic.
