Peugeot 207 CC 1.6 16V HDi Sport

Finding new market niches in the automotive industry is not always successful. Recently, we have seen more and more attempts that fail miserably before people get used to them.

Fortunately, the story with 206 CC is different. The idea of an affordable small hardtop convertible that can be folded and stowed away from the back when it's warm enough hit its target instantly. 206 CC was a hit. Not only among those in love with this car brand, but also among competitors. Even before its successor hit the market, it had several competitors, each offering the same exterior dimensions, two comfortable seats, a folding metal roof, and a decently large trunk when the roof isn't in the back.

If 206 CC was the first and only upon his arrival, then after a few years he became another in the crowd. Therefore, the task that the engineers faced in developing its successor was by no means an easy one. Not because the 206 CC, if you forget for a moment about its cute shape and ingenious decision with the roof, brought with it a lot of mistakes.

An uncomfortable and unergonomic driving position is definitely one of them. He inherited it, but inside it only grew. The seats were even less comfortable, and most importantly, too high for a car with such a low line.

The roof was another problem. There are quite a few cases where this one did not seal properly. The owners of the beautiful Pezhoychek could also say something that goes beyond the quality of workmanship. What his successor would look like was virtually clear as soon as he hit 207 Roads. Still affectionate and lovable. But other questions arose. Will he be able to progress over 206 CC? Will engineers be able to correct mistakes? The answer is yes.

You notice how severe the roof sealing problems were the moment you open the door. When you move the hook, the glass in the door automatically drops several inches lower and opens the hole, similar to what we see in the more expensive and larger convertibles or coupes, and above all, it is a good proof that you will not leave the door. the laundry is too damp.

The driving position has improved by several light-years, there is enough room overhead, even if you are approaching 190 centimeters as your height (tested!), The steering wheel fits nicely in the palm of your hand, only the limited longitudinal movement of the seats can distract you. But only if you are more accustomed to lying in them than sitting.

At Peugeot, this problem could be solved by eliminating the rear seats. Well, they didn't. The 207 CC, like the 206 CC, has a 2 + 2 mark on its ID card, which means that in addition to the two front seats, it also has two rear seats. When he grows (20 centimeters), some will think that now he is finally big enough. Forget it! There is not enough space even for a small child. If the baby still manages to somehow slip into the "seat", he will definitely have no legroom.

Thus, the space is more dedicated to other things, such as storing shopping bags, small suitcases, or business bags. And when the roof is in the boot, that space comes in handy. There is no need to open the boot lid and it takes a long time. However, when you open it, you are surprised at the small opening through which you can store your luggage.

The roof mechanism, like the previous model, performs the work of opening and closing the roof fully automatically. The first operation takes 23 seconds, the second a good 25, and interestingly, the roof can also be opened and closed while driving. The speed should not be more than ten km / h, it's damn low, but now it's possible. If the draft doesn't bother you, don't hesitate! You just need to boldly step on the gas pedal and the fun can begin.

But you can pick up the wind net - this is available for an additional fee - and only then indulge in pleasures. At city speeds (up to 50 km / h), the breeze in this Pejoychek is barely perceptible. It gently caresses the driver and passenger and cools them even more pleasantly on hot days. It becomes annoying when the arrow on the speedometer approaches the number 70. But then the weaving of the seat belt at shoulder level is also annoying. The matter is solved by raising the side windows, which almost completely protects the passenger from drafts. All you feel from now on is just a light pat on the top of your head that only gets more determined when the speed is over the highway limits.

The test CC was equipped with the Sport equipment package, which means you can also find aluminum pedals and shift knob, a richer white-background quad-gauge instrument cluster, leather-wrapped steering wheel, auto-dimming interior mirror for better safety ASR, ESP and active headlights, and for a more beautiful appearance - a chrome-plated exhaust pipe and a protective arc at the rear, a sporty front bumper and 17-inch alloy wheels.

But please don't take the Sport label too seriously. The diesel engine rumbled in the nose of the Peugeot. It's a perfect choice if you want to drive sparingly, but it is loud and distracting at certain speeds due to vibration. Since the 207 CC is larger and heavier than its predecessor (by a good 200 pounds), the job it has to do is no longer so easy. The factory promises almost unchanged performance, and for most of them we can confirm this (top speed, flexibility, braking distance), but we cannot confirm this for acceleration from standstill to 100 km / h, which deviates from the promised 10. thick 9 seconds.

The ultra-modern 1-liter turbocharged petrol engine with the same torque and 6 kW output is without doubt the most suitable and affordable choice in this convertible! Even less sporty than the engine is the steering servo, which is clearly too soft and not communicative enough, a five-speed manual transmission with all known faults and an ESP that automatically engages at 110 km / h. And so it probably quickly becomes clear that you will love everything this convertible has to offer more than engine sound and performance (by the way, the chassis can do a lot).

But before we start to shudder at how Peugeot understands the word "sport", let's think for a moment about who this "baby" is really for. Who liked it the most, performed well in 14 days of testing. Yes mom. Especially for those who often browse Cosmopolitan. And for him, in all honesty, this is also mainly intended. Peugeot has a larger 307 CC for boys (you can get one for just under 800 euros) and a more mature 407 Coupë for men.

Overall rating (314/420)

  • In many areas (steering wheel position, roof sealing, body rigidity ...) the 207 CC is progressing. The only question is whether he can keep the mass of his predecessor. Do not forget, the price has also "increased".

  • Exterior (14/15)

Peugeot has once again managed to draw a beautiful car, which, surprisingly, is made accurately.

  • Interior (108/140)

There is enough space in the front and in the trunk, it sits well, the rear seats are worthless.

  • Engine, transmission (28

    / 40)

Diesel is modern, but not like the new gasoline. Peugeot gearbox!

  • Driving performance (73

    / 95)

The location is good. Also because of the chassis and tires. Violates non-communicative power steering.

  • Performance (24/35)

207 cc more and adequate capacity. Below 1800 rpm, the engine is useless.

  • Security (28/45)

Additional amplifiers, rear arch, head protection, ABS, ESP, active headlights ... safety is normal

  • Economy

Bigger car, (much) more expensive. The diesel engine and the satisfactory warranty package reassure you.
