And what should bring more pleasure and driving pleasure? Undoubtedly, the link between engine and transmission and chassis-to-steering alignment are at the forefront.

Let's start at the beginning, with the structure of the drive. The test 407 consisted of a four-cylinder XNUMX-liter turbodiesel engine and a six-speed manual transmission. The engine uses four-valve head technology, common rail fuel injection, a turbocharger with adaptive vane geometry and a charge air cooler.

The end result is 100 kilowatts (136 horsepower) at 4000 rpm and 320 Newton meters of maximum torque at 2000 rpm, which is quite normal for this type of engine. However, a slightly less common option is to temporarily increase the maximum torque to 340 Nm (the engine electronics automatically adjusts it according to driving conditions), which promises even more flexibility.

The latter is more a matter of theory than practice, as the engine develops power and torque quite gently under all circumstances and with less pronounced increase in flexibility in the 2000 rpm range than we are used to with modern turbo diesels. This would not be considered a minus if we hadn't recently driven a Volvo V50 and a few months ago a Ford Focus C-Max, which were equipped with the same engine. They were both much more agile under any circumstances than the Peugeot. We also accuse him of being immune to twitching of the accelerator pedal (intergas) and general dissatisfaction with the rotation.

The six-speed manual transmission is equally unconvincing in terms of dynamics. You can write that this is still a typical Peugeot. By this we mean mostly relatively precise but slightly prolonged gear shift movements and good gearbox interaction with the driver when driving quietly and less drag when shifting quickly.

The chassis also plays an important role in a fun ride. The latter is 407 stronger than its predecessor, which will especially please in corners, as the body tilt is now less there. It is true, however, that you will therefore be somewhat lacking in driving comfort. Thanks to the stiffer suspension, lateral bumps and similar short bumps are now more noticeable, while the chassis works well with other bumps in the road.

When cornering, the driver will also notice the progress made by Peugeot's engineers in the steering mechanism. Namely, it convinces with its responsiveness, relatively good feedback and accuracy, so adjusting the vehicle's direction around corners will be at least partly a pleasure. This is partly because the stock ESP safety system greatly deprives the driver of the pleasure of the driver. This allows the driver to switch off, but only up to a speed of 50 km / h. When this limit is exceeded, he automatically switches back on and takes over the task of the group trainer.

The driver can adjust the workplace well with the height and depth adjustable steering wheel and the height adjustable seat. When you first encounter the center console, you're likely to get lost between the abundance of toggles and the data displayed on the center screen, but a second glance confirms that the latter are relatively well positioned and ergonomically correct, which is undoubtedly welcomed for a long time. - urgent use.

Only the color center screen, which displays data from radio, air conditioner, trip computer, navigation system and telephone, deserves more displeasure. This is very difficult to read when setting the lighting for night traffic during the day (in strong lighting), and conversely, when the screen is set for daylight, it is likely to be too bright at night and will disturb the occupants in the car. The screen is easy to turn off as it is the least annoying, especially at night.

As we have written many times, the car is technically well designed, but driving with it is not a shocking pleasure, and pleasure is still a good car. if you choose it, it will still be a good buy. This is exactly the case with the Peugeot 407, which, apart from the gearbox and the idle engine, is convincing enough in many other areas to be classified as a very good car. When you take into account the fact that the Peugeot is aimed at (quiet and undemanding) buyers between the ages of 40 and 60, the fun part of the car's character turns out to be even more secondary.
