The pollen filter is located on the passenger side under the windshield. In many cars, it can be reached by opening the glove box or under the hood. The possibility of replacing the filter yourself or in a specialized workshop depends on the type of vehicle.

The air conditioning pollen filter is housed in a filter box that stabilizes it. Only when the filter is firmly inserted into it can it work effectively. To remove and replace the filter, it must be shaken, which can be a problem for inexperienced hands. When shaken, some of the filtered harmful substances can penetrate through the ventilation openings and thus into the vehicle interior.

If in doubt, the filter must be replaced by a workshop.

How often should the cabin filter be changed?

Bacteria, germs, fine dust and pollen: at some point the filter fills up and needs to be replaced. In the spring, one milliliter of air can contain about 3000 pollen, which means a lot of work for the filter.

Universal pollen filters must be replaced every 15 km or at least once a year. For those who suffer from allergies, an even more frequent change is recommended. Reduced airflow or a stronger odor is a clear sign that the filter is in need of replacement.

Which pollen has the best efficiency against?

Activated carbon pollen filters remove significantly more dirt and odors and are therefore preferred over activated carbon filters. In addition, only activated carbon filters can remove contaminants such as ozone and nitrogen oxide. These filters can be recognized by their dark color.

Filter replacement or just cleaning?

Cleaning the pollen filter is also theoretically possible, but not recommended as the filter will lose its effectiveness considerably. Ideally, clean only the filter box and ventilation ducts - but the filter itself is replaced with a new one. Allergy sufferers should not save.

When replacing the filter itself, make sure that dirt does not accumulate in the filter inside the vehicle. It is equally important to clean and disinfect the filter box and ventilation ducts during the shift. Specialty cleaners and disinfectants are available from specialized stores.
