Why is the paint on the car swollen after painting?

Bloating paint on a car, when the surface suddenly swells with bumps, inside of which there is air, is a very common process. Someone thinks that these are just cosmetic flaws, but in reality everything is different. Problems can appear much deeper, because painting is an additional protection against corrosion and defects.

The paint on the car is swollen: causes

All cases can be divided into two groups, namely:

  • peels off and rises factory paint on the body of the car;
  • blistering paint after repair of the paintwork a car.

original paintwork may separate and swell when it is no longer in contact with a hard surface. That is, there have been some changes with the body metal. In the vast majority of cases, this is corrosion, which could occur due to:

  • external defects of the paintwork (mechanical influences);
  • metal rusts from the inside.

In the first variant, air and moisture enter through the damaged coating to the metal surface of the body, and its oxidation begins, the focus of which gradually expands. In the area where the metal is covered with even a slight coating of rust, the paint no longer sticks and begins to deform under the influence of temperature and humidity changes. It turns out that local swellings of the LCP are formed, which we observe in the form of bubbles and folds.

In the second case, the corrosion process begins from the back side of the body metal with an intact external paintwork of the car.

The corrosive process, penetrating to the front side, begins to spread, peeling off the paint.

Outwardly, both processes in the early stages are practically the same, but the methods of elimination are different. If in the first case it is possible to get by with half measures, that is, local restoration of the paintwork of the car body, then the second option requires, first of all, repair of the body part (welding work) or its replacement.

If the peeling of the factory coating occurs quite rarely, then after paint repair it happens a lot more often. There can be a set of reasons here, moreover, it happens that one can only guess about them. Often swelling of superimposed layers of primer or paint after trying to restore the body coating on your own. This may happen due to such reasons:

  • violation of the technological sequence of repair of paintwork;
  • the use of incompatible working compositions;
  • the use of low-quality mixtures to restore the coating of the car body.

Whatever the reason for the peeling paint, you have to remove everything and reapply. Usually this is trusted to specialists after an independent attempt has failed. However, it also happens when a motorist, taking into account mistakes, makes repeated attempts to impose all the necessary components on the body.

Restoration of car paintwork on damaged areas: sequence of actions

To do this, you need to prepare in advance the room where the process of repainting and drying will take place, as well as a set of materials and tools. All three points are very important and affect how long the coating will “live” in the end. The quality of materials significantly affects the price.

Surface cleaning. First of all, you need to condition the surface and remove rust that has already begun to form. Even if it is not very visible. You will need a grinder and sandpaper. The grinder can be replaced without any problems by purchasing special attachments for it. Remember that the process will generate a lot of dust. Prepare safety glasses and a respirator to avoid damaging your health. You can reduce the amount of dust by using a drill instead of a sander, but this option is only suitable if the areas of swelling are small. So, first, use tools to remove the top layer. Next, carefully sand the surface (use a block for better pressure) by hand. This will help remove even the smallest areas of rust.

. When applying a primer coat, you must pay attention to how compatible the selected paint and primer are. Ignoring this rule will lead to the fact that you will get a quickly delaminated damaged top layer. Be sure to dry each applied layer well. It is very important! You can use a regular hair dryer to speed up the process, but remember that overheating the surface will lead to deformation of the properties - do not allow this. If any of these rules are violated, you will get what you already fought with - swelling on the body.

. The final stage is the application of paint. You must also dry all applied layers well and be responsible in the choice of materials. If you followed the technology, let it dry and did not use conflicting compounds, then the result should completely satisfy you. Continue to closely monitor the paintwork surface to notice new defects in time.
