The Ferrari of the 90s is priced at the price of an Alfa Romeo 4C. Which would you choose?

I am very attached to Ferrari 360 Modena: as a teenager in the 90s, she was my dream Ferrari as a child, and the cars you dream of as a child have a special place in your heart. Modela Modena, produced from 1999 to 2004, faced the difficult task of replacing Ferrari F355. It was a revolutionary machine for the horse: no more retractable headlights, soft and curving lines, less than 30% weight compared to its predecessor thanks to the extensive use of aluminum.

The engine, on the other hand, is an evolution of the 355: a "small" 8-liter 90-degree V3,6 with 5 valves per cylinder (with the F430 we switched to 4 valves per cylinder). It produces 400 CV at 8500 rpm e 370 Nm of torque at 3.750 rpm... Enough to throw it out 0-100 km / h in 4,5 seconds up to maximum speed 395 km / h, Ferrari 360 Modena mounts 6-speed manual transmission with a wonderful aluminum ring nut, but if you like, there is also a six-speed robotic sequential gearbox, sharper in action, but thin and rough.

“The sound of an old school race car, wonderful”

FOR STEERING WHEEL FERRARI 360 MODENA

Of course, this is not super fast by today's standards, but however, it feels fantastic. It is a terrifying, nervous machine, even insincere in its actions. Like any mid-engined car, it gives the feeling of "floating" along that thin line, halfway between oversteer and understeer. In the middle of the curve, it needs to be balanced with gas, but be careful, because too much sharpness can have undesirable consequences. The engine is very empty at the bottom and it gives its best results above 6.000 rpm. Beyond that threshold, the soundtrack becomes uplifting and you will soon become addicted to it. The sound is sharper and sharper than modern Ferrari V8s also due to the lower offset, but above all due to 5 valves per cylinder... The sound of an old school racing car is wonderful.

The manual transmission is heavy, but it is a real pleasure to maneuver. while sequential throws hit the back, which is very gripping when you're pulling but annoying at low speeds.

PRICES

A lot of advertising copies Ferrari 360 Modena used, with rezzi ranging from 50.000 65.000 in EUR... Same price as Alfa Romeo 4C. A bargain for anyone looking to buy a dream, a collectible or just a great sports car with noble blood.

Of course, we have to consider the not-so-cheap service of a center-engined Ferrari. Also because Modena has a reputation for being a pretty fragile car.

But if you're ready for it (and rich enough), you can enjoy one of the best Ferrari V8s ever. You will not be disappointed.
