Ski trip. How to pack skis, snowboard? What to remember?

Ski trip. How to pack skis, snowboard? What to remember? Thanks to the removal of some restrictions, you can ski. Renault Driving School instructors explain how to safely transport equipment, how to adapt your driving style to winter conditions and what to pack for a trip to the mountains.

How to pack skis or boards?

Under no circumstances should skis, poles or snowboards be transported unsecured in a vehicle. In the event of a collision or even sudden braking, they can endanger the driver and passengers. The optimal solution is the roof rack, thanks to which we also get space for other luggage.

Before packing the roof rack, it is worth checking the permissible load weight, especially the permissible roof load according to the vehicle manufacturer. Of course, before the trip, you still need to make sure that the box is properly mounted, say the instructors of the Renault Safe Driving School.

Modern boxes are very streamlined, but they can affect the aerodynamics of our car. Increased air resistance makes certain maneuvers difficult, such as overtaking. So we have to adapt the speed to the situation. You should also be prepared for increased fuel consumption. Adhering to the principles of smooth and economical driving will be key.

Customize your driving style

Eco-driving can also make us safer if the road surface is covered in snow or ice.

In winter conditions, all maneuvers should be as smooth as possible, especially braking, steering and acceleration. Avoid hard braking and try to brake the engine. Let's also adjust the speed to the driving conditions, otherwise we risk losing control of the car, says Adam Bernard, director of training for the Renault Driving School.

What should you take with you?

If we are going to the mountains, it is good to have snow chains with us. People who are not experienced in putting them on should practice on a flat surface beforehand.

In case we get stuck in the snow, we can also take a small shovel with us, as well as bits of old carpet or cat litter to scatter under the wheels. It does not hurt to take a reflective vest with us, which will definitely increase our safety when leaving the car, for example, during an emergency stop.
