The MAZ-504 truck tractor based on the chassis of a new truck family of the Minsk Automobile Plant began to be produced in 1965. After 5 years, the car was modernized, the assembly was carried out until 1977. These cars were shipped to customers under the index 504A.

Device and technical characteristics

The tractor is equipped with a frame chassis with dependent spring suspension. Hydraulic shock absorbers are introduced into the design of the front beam suspension, additional springs are used at the rear. A towing bracket is installed on the rear cross member of the frame, designed to evacuate the car. Above the drive axle is a 2-pivot seat with automatic locking. A distinctive feature of the tractor is 2 fuel tanks with a capacity of 350 liters each, which are located on the frame side members.

The basic modification was equipped with a 180-horsepower YaMZ-236 diesel engine with a forced liquid cooling system. The MAZ-504V tractor was distinguished by the use of a 240-horsepower 8-cylinder YaMZ-238 engine. The increased engine power had a positive effect on the dynamics of the road train, which was used for international transport. The modernization carried out in 1977 did not affect the index of the model, which was produced in small batches until 1990.

The cars are equipped with a 5-speed gearbox and a 2-disk dry friction clutch. The rear axle received a conical main pair and additional 3-spindle planetary gears located in the wheel hubs. The total gear ratio is 7,73. To stop the road train, drum brakes with a pneumatic drive are used.

On long descents or slippery roads, an engine brake is used, which is a rotating damper in the exhaust tract.

The truck is equipped with power steering, the angle of rotation of the front wheels is 38°. To accommodate the driver and 2 passengers, a metal cabin with a separate berth was used. To provide access to the power unit, the cab leans forward, there is a safety mechanism that prevents the unit from spontaneous lowering. A lock is also installed that fixes the cab in the normal position.

The driver's seat and side passenger's seat are mounted on shock absorbers and are adjustable in several directions. A heater connected to the engine cooling system was included as standard. Air is circulated by means of a fan and through lowered glass doors or ventilation grilles.

At the Minsk Automobile Plant, 2 experimental modifications were created with a wheel arrangement of 6x2 (515, with a rolling axle) and 6x4 (520, with a balancing rear bogie). The machines were tested, but did not reach mass production. The plant serially produced the 508B version, equipped with a gearbox on both shafts, while the design did not provide for the installation of a transfer case with a reduced row. The equipment was used as tractors for timber trucks.

To work with dump semi-trailers, modification 504B was produced, which was distinguished by the installation of a gear oil pump and a hydraulic distributor. After modernization in 1970, the model index changed to 504G.

Prices and analogues of the car

The cost of MAZ-504 V tractors that have undergone a major overhaul is 250-300 thousand rubles. Equipment is not in original condition. It is impossible to find machines or tractors of early series designed to work with tipper semi-trailers. This team worked for several years and was liquidated; replaced it from the factory with a new one. Analogues are the MAZ-5432 tractor, equipped with a turbocharged 280-horsepower diesel engine, or the MAZ-5429 truck, equipped with a 180-horsepower YaMZ 236 atmospheric engine.
