Causes of malfunction of power windows and their solution

A simple reason for non-working power windows is the control buttons. Close them directly: working keys close the window. If there is no reaction, replace the button.
A mechanism for lowering, raising and holding windows in a certain position is hidden under the car door trim. The device is set in motion by turning the handle on the door card or by pressing a button. If the efforts made do not give results, it is important to find the reason why the power window does not work.
How is the window regulator
Sliding windows in the car are designed to ventilate the passenger compartment, prevent vaporization in it. To understand why the power window (SP) stopped working in a car, understand its device.
The operation of the usual option is provided by a drive, a lifting mechanism, and a control system.
There are two types of drives: mechanical (SP drives the physical force on the handle) and electric (the mechanism is driven by an electric motor, you just need to press the corresponding key).
Window lifter
Lifting mechanisms according to their design are divided into several types:
- Rope. The main component is the drum. A flexible element is wound on it, stretched further on several rollers. When the drum rotates, one end of the cable (chain, belt) is wound on it, the other is unwound. So the element itself receives translational movement. Together with the cable, the glass connected to it by a plate moves.
- Rack. In such a device, manual or electric motors create a rotational movement of the gear, which, in turn, drives a linear system of racks.
- Lever (single or double lever design). Principle of operation: rotation from the drive through the system of gears is transmitted to the levers, and they move the plate on which the glass is attached.
The control system is a unit that transmits a command from the driver to the actuator. Most often, it is the “brain” that is to blame for why the power window in the car does not work. The ECU has great functionality: automatic opening and closing of windows, reverse movement, remote control from the outside, blocking the switching on of switches.
Possible causes of power window malfunctions
When the window regulator does not work in the car, comfort is disturbed. To find and fix the cause, remove the door card and check:
- that the mechanism is intact;
- foreign objects did not get into it;
- the cable is not broken, and it is not jammed.

Window regulator does not respond to pressing the control keys
Perhaps the problem is in the fuses or the wires in the corrugation located between the car body and the door are broken. Inspect the "weak spot", feel each wire in the twist. If the break could not be found, ring the entire wiring.
Glasses have reached extreme points, but the drives continue to work
Limit switches failed. Although the parts are considered repairable, it is difficult to restore them. Therefore, the limit switches are changed entirely.
ECU reset
The "auto" mode on the window regulator does not work when the terminals are removed from the battery or connectors from the control units. Reprogram block:
- Press the button, lower the glass.
- Hold the key pressed for 3-4 seconds until you hear a characteristic click from the block.
- Then lift the glass in the same way.
Control buttons
Do the same for each window. If the passenger windows cannot be controlled from the driver's seat, reprogram each door separately.

The wiring is broken, moisture got into the unit. Remove corrosion of electronic boards by wiping with alcohol, and treat contacts and connectors with silicone grease in the form of a spray.
Chaotic operation of power windows
This "disorients" the central lock. Then the mechanism also stops working.
Lubricant deficiency
All engaging parts of the machine operate with a lubricant that can thicken and dry out.
If the window lifter in the car “stuck”, it means that there is not enough oil, the guides turned out to be skewed (although they themselves could be deformed).
Lubricate the hinges through the oiler with machine oil. Apply grease to moving parts. Rinse the oxides with a spray, clean. Also lubricate the mechanism.
Electrical part
When faced with a problem, arm yourself with a multimeter and a standard set of tools.
Check:
- Fuse. If the element is defective, replace it, look for the reason why the element burned out.
- Voltage. Remove the casing, measure the voltage at the outputs of the electric motor (the norm is 12-12,4 V). If you find a lower figure, inspect the wiring or call its individual sections. At the same time, check the connectors: current does not pass through soured connections.
- Contacts. Clean them up and coat with grease.

Motor
This component is the loaded part of the joint venture. The electric motor also has typical problems.
Sticking brushes to the rotor
A consequence of corrosion or increased motor temperature. To eliminate sticking:
- Remove the motor.
- Clean the rotor with sandpaper.
Plastic gear wear
When the glass moves in jerks, sticks, act step by step:
- Remove the motor.
- Remove the front cover.
- Use a screwdriver to pry the gear, remove it from the housing.
- Install new part.
Worn bearings make a howling sound when the power windows operate. Replacing defective parts is simple: you got to the gear, removed it, now knock out the shaft using a drift. Next, press the bearing, install a new one.
When you can operate a car with a faulty power window
A car is a vehicle of increased danger. When driving, you must be sure that the car is in perfect technical condition. Is it possible to operate a car with non-working power windows, it is written in section 2. paragraph 2.3.1. "Rules of the road".
Traffic rules provide for 5 breakdowns, in which the movement of the vehicle is not allowed at all:
- Brake system.
- Steering.
- Non-working optics.
- Defective windshield wiper on the driver's side.
- The coupling device of a vehicle with a trailer failed.
There are no power windows in this list, but the operation of such a car is nevertheless prohibited. This seems to be a contradiction.
It is important to understand in which case the operation of the car is allowed when the power window does not work. If you need to get home or to a repair shop, these are reasons why you can operate a machine with faulty SPs with extra precautions. For personal reasons, a car with inoperative power windows cannot be driven. However, there is no penalty for this.
