Silencer working principle

A car exhaust pipe or muffler is designed to remove car exhaust gases that are produced when fuel is burned in an engine and reduce engine noise.

What are the parts of the muffler?

Silencer working principle

Any standard muffler consists of a manifold, converter, front and rear muffler. Let's briefly dwell on each of the parts separately.

  1. Collector

The manifold is directly connected to the engine and diverts the exhaust gases to the muffler. Exposed to high temperatures (up to 1000C). Therefore, it is made of high-strength metal: cast iron or stainless steel. The collector is also subject to strong vibrations and must be securely fastened.

  1. Converter

The converter burns the unburned fuel mixture in the engine, and also retains harmful substances contained in the exhaust gases. The converter is equipped with special honeycombs to retain harmful substances.

platinum and palladium plated. On some brands of cars, the converter is installed in the manifold.

  1. Front muffler

Exhaust gas resonance reduced in the front muffler. To do this, it is equipped with a special system of grids and holes. They reduce the consumption of exhaust gases, reduce their temperature and vibration.

  1. Rear silencer

It is designed to minimize vehicle noise as much as possible. It consists of a large number of air ducts, a system of partitions and a special heat-resistant filler. This reduces noise as well as the temperature and airflow velocity of the spent fuel.

And finally, a few tips from the experienced: how to choose a quality muffler for your car.

  1. If you want your muffler to last longer, buy an aluminum or stainless steel muffler. A quality aluminum muffler should have a matching aluminum color. Silencers made of aluminum and stainless steel withstand high temperatures, aggressive environments and practically do not rust. The service life of such mufflers is usually 2-3 times longer than conventional mufflers made of black steel.
  2.  When buying a muffler, you should also carefully examine your device, whether it has a converter, a second layer of casing and strong internal baffles.

Don't skimp on buying the cheapest muffler. As you know, a miser always pays twice. A high-quality and reliable muffler will last a long time and will not cause problems during maintenance.
