Selling a car in person or to a dealer

Selling a car in person or to a dealer

As with everything, there are pros and cons to both being a private seller and having a dealer.

So you're thinking about selling your car to a dealer but not sure if you should sell your car privately instead.

As with everything, both options have their pros and cons, which means there is no single correct answer you could give. Which is better will depend on several things.

Private sale

In a private sale, you take on the responsibility of seeing the sale through and in return expect more money for your efforts. The process is not difficult, but it requires an investment of your time and energy.

First you need to evaluate the car. Look at the same models for sale, or use the Rate Your Vehicle tool and determine the price on the sticker from there.

You need to make sure it's in salable condition - make sure the car is clean, presentable and roadworthy. Most people looking to buy a car will want to use it immediately, so mechanically it needs to be ready to go.

You must be available for interested buyers to contact you and ask you any questions about the vehicle. Try to respond quickly to all requests and be a little flexible when arranging inspections and test drives. You must choose the lowest price you will accept before entering into negotiations with buyers - always keep this figure in mind and don't let a persuasive salesperson change their mind.

In most cases, a private sale will mean more money in your pocket, so it's definitely worth it if you can afford the time (and hassle).

Selling a car to a dealer

“Sell the car to a dealer or sell it privately?” - you ask. If you're thinking "Should I sell my car to a dealer?" it's worth noting that many people find selling a car to a dealer the easiest option; however, the convenience will cost you. You will receive less money for your car to avoid all the hassle of actually finding a new owner.

Aside from the fact that this process requires almost nothing from you, one of the main advantages of selling a car to a dealer is that you sell it when you want (i.e. immediately) instead of relying on the mercy of the market.

If you do decide to compromise between what's easiest and what's most profitable, follow these two simple rules to get the most satisfaction out of selling your car to a dealer:

If you are selling your vehicle to a dealership, take your vehicle to a dealer who deals with related vehicles. This could mean selling your Hyundai to a Hyundai dealership or selling your SUV to a dealership that specializes in used SUVs. It can also mean that you get your vehicle delivered to the location that best suits its style. For example, a fancy convertible may be easier to sell at a dealership in a seaside town than a regular car.

If you can, trade. This makes a huge difference to the overall value you get from the deal. The reason dealers still exist in the used car market today is because trading is still a bargain, especially when you need a little finance to survive.
