Porsche unveils VR rear seat entertainment with holoride

Discover the universe from the backseat of a Porsche: During the Autobahn Expo Day at Wagenhallen in Stuttgart, the sports car manufacturer and holorid startups will showcase what entertainment Porsche will offer in the future.

The purpose of the joint project between Porsche and holoride is to give passengers the opportunity to immerse themselves in the world of virtual entertainment. To do this, a VR device with sensors is connected to the car so that its content can be adapted to the movement of the car in real time. For example, if the car is moving in a curve, the shuttle that the passenger is practically traveling with will also change direction. This gives a feeling of complete immersion, which significantly reduces the symptoms of seasickness. In the future, for example, the system will be able to evaluate navigation data to adjust the duration of a VR game according to the calculated travel time. In addition, this technology can be used to integrate other entertainment services such as movies or virtual business conferences in the passenger seat.

“We are grateful to the startup Autobahn for the many opportunities and contacts that made them possible. This has given our projects a big boost in recent weeks, allowing us to build a prototype in just 100 days,” said Nils Wolney, CEO of holoride. He founded the entertainment technology start-up at the end of 2018 in Munich with Markus Kuhne and Daniel Profendiner. Using the Startup Autobahn platform, the latter company has already demonstrated that its holoride software works seamlessly with vehicle serial data for motion sync, real-time virtual reality (VR) and cross-reality (XR).

Holoride software enables the offering of sustainable content: a new media form specifically designed for use in cars, in which content adapts to driving time, direction and context. The startup's business model takes an open platform approach that allows other car and content manufacturers to take advantage of this technology.

“Holoride opens up a new dimension to in-car entertainment. The independent approach of the manufacturer convinced us from the very beginning, and over the past few weeks the team has proven what this technology is capable of. taking the next steps together,” says Anja Mertens, Smart Mobility Project Manager at Porsche AG.

“Holoride is committed to introducing this new form of entertainment using commercially available rear-seat VR headsets for marketing over the next three years. With the further development of the Car-to-X infrastructure, road events can become part of a long-term experience. Then the traffic light stops being an unexpected obstacle in the plot or interrupts the curriculum with a short test.

Under the motto "Next Visions. Change the game – create tomorrow”, Porsche invites innovators and partners to the International Motor Show (IAA) in Frankfurt on 20 September to discuss the future of mobility. You will be able to see the results of the joint vision of Porsche and holoride.

For startup Autobahn

Since the beginning of 2017, Porsche has been a partner of the largest innovation platform in Europe, Startup Autobahn. It provides synergies between leading companies in the industry and technology start-ups in Stuttgart. As part of the six-month programs, corporate partners and startups jointly develop prototypes to evaluate possible further cooperation between the two countries, test the technology and conduct a successful pilot production. A number of companies have merged with Porsche. These include Daimler, University of Stuttgart, Arena 2036, Hewlett Packard Enterprise, DXC Technology, ZF Friedrichshafen and BASF. Over the past two and a half years, Porsche has completed over 60 projects with Startup Autobahn. About a third of the results are incorporated into the development of mass production.
