Cannon fat. Checking the effectiveness of budget anticorrosive
Cannon fat (sometimes simply called “pushsalo” among motorists; abroad, a similar product is produced under the brand name Cosmoline) is a product of protective car chemicals that is actively used in many cases. It is considered a completely budgetary substitute for many, more expensive products intended for anti-corrosion treatment of automotive equipment.
Composition
Initially, cannon fat was used as a conservation lubricant for light and heavy weapons, in particular, artillery barrels. It is produced in accordance with the technical requirements of GOST 19537-84, referring to the group of greases.
The composition of cannon fat includes:
- DS-11 oil,% - 25… 35.
- Petrolatum,% - 60… 70.
- Ceresin,% - 3… 5.
- Additive MNI-7,% - 0,9… 1,1.
Visually, it is a greasy mass of brown or dark yellow color. Must contain no more than 0,015% of mechanical impurities, in the complete absence of water and water-soluble components. The acid number of the product is in the range of 0,5 ... 1,0, and the viscosity at a temperature of 60ºC is 40mm2/from.
Oil DS-11 (otherwise - M10B) is used as a summer lubricant for carburetor and diesel engines of large tonnage trucks. It has a high antioxidant capacity, and well cleans contact surfaces from high-molecular compounds. The use of petrolatum (PSS brand) gives cannon fat conservation properties, because, due to its adhesive properties, it has good adhesion to the surface. Ceresin (crystalline wax) is a component of many greases, regulating their viscosity with increasing temperatures. The additive MNI-7 improves the protective properties and reduces the cracking of the already applied protective layer under shock loads.
Quite a wide range of contents of individual components often leads to the appearance on the market of low-quality fakes for cannon fat. Such a “pushsalo” is characterized by low plasticity, breaks and crumbles, and is much lighter in color. It hardens on prolonged contact with air. Therefore, despite the attractive price, cannon fat should be purchased from trusted manufacturers who sell it specifically for conservation purposes.
How to apply?
In car maintenance and care technologies, this type of lubricant is effectively used to displace water, prevent and penetrate rust into internal and external cavities.
Processing of auto parts with cannon fat has its own characteristics:
- The initially high viscosity of the composition predetermines its application with a wide brush with medium hardness. Grease is applied to the grooves and gaps with a syringe.
- Before processing the internal surfaces in order to increase plasticity and eliminate lumps, the original product must be heated. Rapid heating is unacceptable, so the mass is heated either on an electric stove or using indirect heating heaters, for example, infrared ones.
- Already formed focal areas of rust should be removed by mechanical cleaning, preferably manually using sandpaper grades P36 or P40.
- Sometimes, in order to facilitate work, heated cannon fat is diluted using white spirit. Experienced motorists do not recommend doing this: white spirit is chemically aggressive, and contributes to the accelerated erosion of rubber parts, and its vapors are toxic to the human body. It is better to use Movil, or a related drug Tectyl ML. They are available in aerosol packaging, convenient for use. Movil (50 ... 100 mm3 per 1 kg of the initial mass), after which the composition is intensively mixed.
It is not advisable to use gasoline to speed up the drying process and improve uniformity: processing safety will decrease, and the uniformity of the mixture will decrease due to the rapid evaporation of gasoline from the surface.
What to dilute?
In addition to movil and tektyl, other substances are also used to reduce the initially high viscosity of pushsal, in particular, mineral spirits - ethanol or isopropyl. Methanol is a more active solvent, but remember that its vapors are extremely toxic and dangerous.
The disadvantage of all types of thinners is that they change the conservation effectiveness of cannon fat to one degree or another, so it is advisable to use them in limited quantities. And this despite the fact that the fat itself is absolutely non-toxic and has a low risk of fire (flash point - at least 230ºFROM).

The price of cannon fat in the regions of the country ranges from 100 ... 180 rubles. per 1 kg, which predetermines its widespread use. Car owners point to the following product benefits:
- High elasticity of the processed surface.
- Resistant to water and aqueous solutions.
- Efficient over a wide temperature range.
Many reviews note that the durability of the coating using cannon fat increases significantly if Canadian-made Rust Stop anticorrosive agent is added to the mass: the antioxidant resistance of parts increases. In order to increase heat resistance at high operating temperatures, some car owners recommend adding 33K-3u preservation grease to pushsal.
