QuantumScape: Our solid cells went through 1 cycle. This is 000 thousand. km of run with battery 480 kWh

QuantumScape, one of the startups developing solid electrolyte cells, praised the ongoing testing of the cell series. In a test car, they have already passed for 1 cycle, which means that in a car they will withstand a mileage of 000-480 thousand kilometers, depending on the capacity of the package.

When QuantumScape introduced its solid electrolyte cells in early December, the company's stock price more than doubled to a peak of $130. Shortly thereafter, it began to sharply decline, falling more than 40% on New Year's Day - the worst result of the day - which attracted a lot of interest from stock market analysts. It looks like the company decided to "show something" to limit speculative activity.

The startup boasted on Twitter that the cells in the testing machine have just gone through 1 full cycles with a power of 000 C (1x container, source). For an electric car with a 100 kWh battery, this would mean a range of 480 kilometers, for a car with about 180 kWh batteries, 800 kilometers. The latter value we do not see on the market yet, but it seems that in the future, large SUVs and limousines should be equipped with 150+ kWh batteries.

After 1 cycle, the average capacity was 000%. If further decline was also linear, the batteries in the car have reached the end of their service life. – that is: they will be reduced to 70 percent of factory capacity – after running 1,44-2,4 million km. Let's add that tests with 1 C power are accelerated tests, normal consumption works rather with fractional tests (C / 3, C / 5), because it is difficult to constantly use 60-100 kW (82-136 hp) in an electric car authorities. However, at three or five times lower power, the tests should take correspondingly longer.

QuantumScape currently has prototypes of solid electrolyte lithium metal cells, but they are still far from commercialization.... The company has yet to develop a mass-production process and only wants to approach the subject when it is confident that the items are indeed meeting expectations. It means that the possible first cars with solid electrolyte QuantumScape will appear only in the second half of the decade.if they appear at all.

There is a curiosity in the graph provided by the startup: the cells are fully tested at 30 degrees Celsius and 3,4 atmospheres. (3 hPa). The solid-state elements known to us today require heating to at least 445-60 degrees Celsius (see: Mercedes eCitaro G) or the use of high pressures.
