Extended test: Škoda Fabia Combi 1.2 TSI (81 kW) Ambition

Therefore, the box body version of this year's Slovenian car has undergone extensive testing. The fact that Fabia has already established itself in a new form (as the third generation) is also confirmed by the sales statistics on the Slovenian market. By the end of May this year, 548 of them had been sold, which puts it in fifth place in its class. Famous names are more popular with Slovenian buyers: Clio, Polo, Corsa and Sandero. Of all these competitors, only the leading Clio has a station wagon as an optional body version. Thus, the Fabia Combi will become easier if we can define the search for customers who are looking for a small and at the same time spacious car. At the very first moment, I opened the trunk lid on the new Fabia, I just sharpened it.

Škoda engineers have succeeded in reinventing the van. The Fabio Combi is 4,255 meters long and has two comfortable sized seats with a 530 liter boot in the rear. Compared to the Clio (Grandtour), which has a slightly longer body (just over one centimeter), the Fabia is 90 liters larger. Even in a family comparison with the Seat Ibiza ST, the Fabia does a great job. Ibiza is indeed two centimeters shorter, but even here the trunk is much more modest (120 liters). And since the Fabia Combi, even the larger Rapid Spaceback cannot be realized. Although it is seven inches longer, it offers just 415 liters of luggage space. Thus, the Fabia is a kind of space champion among small cars.

But due to the trunk, the space for passengers is not reduced at all, even on the back bench it is enough. Even that popular last option—preparing the seat for front length—doesn’t light up. With the Fabia, Škoda did well in terms of space. Everyday use is also quite eloquent, there is really a lot in the trunk, even four spare wheels so that they stand upright and you do not have to fold the rear seatbacks. The appearance of the car mentioned in the introduction should also be mentioned as an incentive to buy a Fabia Combi. This is a kind of extremely rational product in which it will be difficult for your eyes to stop at any particular part of the body. But in the aggregate of everything, it is quite acceptable in form and, above all, noticeable from any side, like a Škoda. The reputation of the brand in Slovenia has grown significantly over the years. This is one of the reasons why the Czech branch of Volkswagen has gained a reputation among buyers of reliable technology, similar to that used in the cars of the German parent concern.

Otherwise, at the Fabia, the latest acquisitions we know from the Volkswagen Polo took several years of maturation to bring them to fruition. Under the hood is the latest 1,2-liter turbocharged four-cylinder engine that will live up to expectations. In terms of power in general, because 110 “horses” in such a small car is already a real luxury. But depending on the price difference (€700) between a regular 90 or 110 "horsepower" engine of the same size, the latter, the more powerful one, is actually more recommended. Already in our first test Fabie Combi (AM 9/2015) with the same engine but richer equipment (Style) together with a six-speed gearbox performed well. At the same time, it is powerful enough not to be afraid of difficult overtaking on ordinary roads, and also incredibly economical if you just try to take full advantage of modern turbocharged gasoline engines (direct injection). It does not even need to be driven at high speeds, and then it is much like a turbodiesel with moderate fuel consumption.

Why is the price of the tested model just under two thousandths higher than the regular Ambition 1.2 TSI? This is taken care of by accessories that make it even more attractive - black lacquered lightweight rims (16 inches) and insulating glass. For more comfort, there's also an electric rear window, halogen headlights with added LED daytime running lights, Climatronic air conditioning, rear parking sensors and cruise control, and for less worries while driving, there's a spare tire. In the coming weeks and months, the Fabia Combi is likely to impress someone from the editorial staff of Auto magazine.
