Extended test: Mazda CX-5 CD150 AWD - standard bearer

As a pioneer in Mazda's KODO design language and especially Skyactive technology, the CX-5 entered the market with serious intentions to convince skeptics about traditional engine technology. Mazda's response to the downscaling trend continues to be their ideology for technical improvements to existing engines and all components that directly affect efficiency, emissions and consumption. Thus, all Skyactive engines undergo a process of reducing unnecessary friction and losses and adapting to a 14: 1 compression ratio in favor of greater efficiency.

Thus, after five years, which is a fairly short life for a specific model, the new Mazda CX-5 entered the market. The design changes are just an evolution, not a revolution, which is acceptable since customers have adopted Mazda's design guidelines quite well. The most noticeable change is the narrower headlights and longer bonnet overhang. The interior also has not undergone major changes, but everything is very refined. Ergonomics have been improved, the driver has received a new steering wheel, more comfortable seats, and the shift lever has been moved four centimeters closer so that the ideal driving position is just a matter of choosing a few settings.

The task of the infotainment system provider is taken over by the touchscreen (only when the vehicle is stationary) in cooperation with a renowned operator on the middle ridge. In addition to the aforementioned display, the CX-5 is mainly equipped with a wide range of safety features such as low speed collision avoidance, blind spot monitoring and lane departure warning. The latter can be quite sensitive and annoying, but it cannot be turned off permanently as it lights up every time we restart the car.

When we mention Mazda, it’s immediately clear that this is a driver-centered vehicle, so the new CX-5 is no exception. The aforementioned gearbox, with its short movements and precise strokes, simply requires shifting even when it is not necessary. The engine in the bow of "our" long-range test car is weaker than two 2,2-liter four-cylinder turbo diesels. It is capable of developing 150 "horses", which is quite satisfactory given the low weight of the car. The all-wheel drive in the CX-5 is not designed for more challenging off-road adventures, but is capable of transferring up to 50 percent of the power to the rear wheels, which is enough to provide optimal traction on poor surfaces.

Since the Mazda CX-5 dealer has entrusted us with longer tests, we will dwell in more detail on the individual segments of this car. So far, we can say that he is fully occupied on our list and that we are diligently accumulating test kilometers.
