Extended test: Opel Adam 1.4 Twinport Slam

Probably because emotions are involved. And we immediately fell in love with "our" Adam. Well, in my case, this love grew out of a sympathetic connection with my daughter, who was named Adam B. on the very first day. This nickname was adopted to such an extent that journalists from other automotive magazines also used the term, saying: "Oh, today you are with a bee ...". Little things like that, in connection with the overall driving feel and responsive appearance, create emotions in us with which we attribute character to the car.

All this sentimentality from the introduction would not have become part of the regular tests if we had not said goodbye to "our" Adam. Three months of communication ended in the blink of an eye. But it's the same with the things we like. Interestingly, the car served us for much longer distances. It so happened that he was “forced” to visit the motoGP venue twice, once our best motocross rider Roman Jelen took him to Bratislava for an exclusive test of new KTM bikes and we also went to Split to test the new Yamaha models. They certainly became great friends with our photographer Uros Modlic, with whom they visited one of the races in and around Slovenia almost every weekend. The remaining 12.490 kilometers are the same and other everyday routes of an Autoshop employee.

In fact, the spaciousness of the front seats and the good ergonomics of the driver's seat have a lot to offer for a comfortable and easy ride on (even longer) routes. With my height of 195 centimeters, I had no problem getting behind the wheel and sitting on comfortable seats for a long time. The second floor is on the back bench. In this case, it becomes only a dump for luggage, since it is impossible to sit behind the driver of my measurements. If you move the front passenger in front a little forward, then for one behind it is also tolerable. However, another reason for a relaxing trip to Adam can be attributed to the rich equipment.

It would be hard to miss something. A set of useful and fun electronics assembled in the IntelliLink multitasking system works great. The simple and colorful (in some cases only slightly amusing translation from English to Slovenian) user interface offers us a treasure trove of additional applications that simplify some tasks or simply save time. At the end of the test, we had a few cold November days to learn how to heat the seat and steering wheel. We loved this feature so much that later, when we got the (otherwise well equipped) Insignia to test, we just missed little Adam.

The 1,4 liter engine for a bee is not bad. Power of 74 kilowatts or 100 "horsepower" sounds less on paper, but it loves to spin and has a pleasant sound. It is only worth mentioning that at the lowest revs it is a little asthmatic and likes to fall asleep unless we get the right gear when we need to pull.

Instead of a five-speed manual gearbox, a six-speed manual gearbox would be more appropriate, not because of acceleration, but because the engine rpm will be lower at higher speeds (highway) and thus noise and consumption are reduced. That's an average of 7,6 liters per 100 kilometers during the three-month test, which is a lot, but it should be borne in mind that we used the Adam mainly in the city and on the highway, where fuel consumption is highest. But whatever we are “to blame” for could quickly fade away as they recently unveiled a new three-cylinder turbocharged gasoline engine that will power the Adame. Since we are confident that this is "it", we already look forward to the test. Maybe even extended. My child agrees, Opel, what do you say?
