Hyundai says its new car is a crossover. Essentially the car is shaped like an inflated hatchback, with no yardstick to indicate its size, it almost resembles a Volkswagen Golf. The European classification has a problem with this, because with the external dimensions of the start of the D segment (length: 4,635 m, width: 1,89 m, height: 1,605 m) it has a wheelbase that would not be ashamed of an E-segment car of the internal combustion (3 meters).

Hyundai Ioniq 5 and Kia e-Niro

Against the background of the Kii e-Niro (length 4,375 m, wheelbase 2,7 m, width 1,805 m, height 1,56 m), you can immediately see that the Ioniq 5 is slightly longer and wider, but with a shorter front overhang. The E-Niro is a grateful comparator because it's the only model on the list that uses a versatile diesel-electric platform. Two other cars - Volkswagen ID.3 and Tesla Model 3 - were originally designed as electric, so the engineers did not have to think about the large "engine compartment":

It's worth remembering that the e-Niro's diesel platform required certain compromises. In order to leave enough space in the cabin, the manufacturer decided to push the battery down. Some of the press photos were cleverly camouflaged with a shadow under the car, but the protruding battery can be seen in the videos - see for example 1:26 or 1:30:

Compared to the Tesla Model 3 (length: 4,694m, height: 1,443m, width: 1,933m, wheelbase: 2,875m), you can see a significantly higher roofline and longer wheelbase. The latter becomes symbolic when you take into account that the maximum capacity of the batteries of both cars is the same - that is, Tesla either packs the cells better or uses better chemistry (the facts say that both conditions can be met:

Comparison results of the Ioniq 5 and Volkswagen ID.3 could be expected (length: 4,262 m, width: 1,809 m, height: 1,552 m, wheelbase: 2,765 m):

The Volkswagen ID.3 is just smaller, more compact, the Ioniq 5 is more and more of a family car. However, if it turns out that prices for both models in Poland are comparable - which is quite likely - the German model could have some really hard times ahead.

Prices for the Hyundai Ioniq 5 in Germany start at € 41 for a rear-wheel drive version with a 900 kWh battery. In Poland this should amount to approximately 58 zlotys. There will also be a more expensive option with larger batteries and dual-axle drive.
