Real coverage and EPA: Tesla Model 3 LR is a leader, but overrated. Second Porsche Taycan 4S, third Tesla S Perf

Edmunds has posted an updated chart of the electric vehicle range. The leader was the Tesla Model 3 Long Range (2021), which reached 555 kilometers on a battery. Porsche finished second, with Model S and Y Long Range still missing from the rankings.

Real Electric Vehicle Ranges vs. Manufacturer Claims

The latest ranking looks like this:

  1. Tesla Model 3 LR (2021) – range according to the EPA catalog = 568 km, Range reached = 555 km,
  2. Porsche Taycan 4S (2020) with extended battery – range according to the EPA catalog = 327 km, Range reached = 520 km,
  3. Tesla Model S Performance (2020) – range according to the EPA catalog = 525 km, Range reached = 512 km,
  4. Hyundai Kona Electric (2019) – range according to the EPA catalog = 415 km, Range reached = 507 km,
  5. Ford Mustang Mach-E 4X / AWD XR (2021) – range according to the EPA catalog = 434,5 km, Range reached = 489 km,
  6. Tesla Model X Long Range (2020) – range according to the EPA catalog = 528 km, Range reached = 473 km,
  7. Volkswagen ID.4 First Edition (2020) – range according to the EPA catalog = 402 km, Range reached = 462 km,
  8. Kia e-Niro 64 yen (2020) – range according to the EPA catalog = 385 km, Range reached = 459 km,
  9. Chevrolet Bolt (2020) – range according to the EPA catalog = 417 km, Range reached = 446 km,
  10. Tesla Model Y Performance (2020) – range according to the EPA catalog = 468 km, Range reached = 423 km,
  11. Tesla Model 3 Performance (2018) – range according to the EPA catalog = 499 km, Range reached = 412 km,
  12. Audi e-tron Sportback (2021) – range according to the EPA catalog = 351 km, Range reached = 383 km,
  13. Nissan Leaf e + (2020) – range according to the EPA catalog = 346 km, Range reached = 381 km,
  14. Tesla Model 3 Standard Range Plus (2020) – range according to the EPA catalog = 402 km, Range reached = 373 km,
  15. Polestar 2 Performance (2021 years) – range according to the EPA catalog = 375 km, Range reached = 367 km.

So the list shows that Tesla is a manufacturer that, in accordance with the procedures of the US Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), receives inflated, maximum possible values.. And this is rarely achieved in real driving. The rest of the companies show conservative, underestimated results - especially for South Korean brands and Porsche (source).

Buffer sizes in selected vehicles

Edmunds also claims to have been contacted by a Tesla engineer defending the Californian manufacturer's cars. He found that the test was not carried out correctly, as the cars had to drive until the battery was completely discharged, and not just until the meters showed "0". The portal decided to check this and received these results after the number "0" appeared on the range finder. They can be thought of as information about the size of the buffer:

  1. Ford Mustang Mach-E 4X (2021 од) – 9,3 km at 105 km / h with a full stop 11,7 kilometer,
  2. Tesla Model Y Performance (2020) – 16,6 km at 105 km / h with a full stop 20,3 kilometer,
  3. Volkswagen ID.4 1st (2021) – 15,1 km at 105 km / h with a full stop 20,8 kilometer,
  4. Tesla Model 3 SR + (2020) – 20,3 km at 105 km / h with a full stop 28,3 kilometer,
  5. Tesla Model 3 LR (2021) – 35,4 km at 105 km / h with a full stop 41,7 kilometer.

Thus, this thesis seems at least partially justified, but it is worth remembering that it is unwise to move the electrician when the range has dropped to zero. It is difficult to determine the size of the remaining buffer (the Tesla engineer also spoke about this), the power reserve depends on the speed of movement, air temperature or road conditions. It is no coincidence that the manufacturer begins to insist on charging when the battery charge indicator shows about ten percent.

It is also worth noting that two important models are still missing from the ranking: Tesla Model S and Y Long Range. Tesla Performance variants usually look worse, if only because of the large rims.
