Regeneration of a two-mass wheel. Is it always possible and profitable?

Regeneration of a two-mass wheel. Is it always possible and profitable? The dual-mass flywheel is an important element of the engine compartment. How long it will work without serious problems depends on its proper operation. However, once they appear, repair costs can be quite high. We advise how to avoid them.

Why a dual mass wheel?

The drives installed in modern cars are very complex structures. Manufacturers make sure they meet stringent exhaust emission standards, are efficient and at the same time lighter, which should translate into more efficient performance.

As a result, engine units had to be modified and adapted many years ago to the developing technology, and one of the most important, and sometimes problematic, elements was dual-mass wheels. Initially, they were installed in turbocharged diesel engines, today they can also be found in gasoline units. Interestingly, three-quarters of new vehicles leaving the factory every day are equipped with a dual-mass flywheel.

Characteristics of the dual-mass flywheel

The dual-mass flywheel is located between the drive and gearbox and is responsible for damping vibrations. It consists of a main mass wheel, two bearings: sliding and ball bearings, arc springs, a drive plate, a primary mass wheel housing and a secondary mass wheel. At the time of operation, the engine creates vibrations that are transmitted to the body, interior and vehicle drive system. With large vibrations, the phenomenon of constant impact and abrasion of the metal parts of the drive system occurs, which, as a result of lack of control, can lead to significant failure. Therefore, "double mass" is used, which can effectively take care of car components and usability.

Dual wheel. Failure symptoms

As a rule, the first sign of a malfunction is a characteristic noise in the area of \u150b\u200bthe gearbox, metallic noise, engine vibration at idle, knocking when starting and stopping the engine. Additionally, there may be problems with soft start, acceleration and gear shifting. The average mileage of a car requiring the intervention of a mechanic is 30 - 50 thousand. km, although there are exceptions to this rule. A breakdown can appear much earlier, even at 250-XNUMX thousand. km, and much later, for example, by XNUMX thousand km.

The state of the flywheel can be judged by its appearance, carefully analyzing the working surface, i.e. area of contact with the clutch disc. Every scratch, wear, heat discoloration or crack means that the part needs to be replaced or repaired. It is also worth paying attention to the plain bearings and rings, and the amount of grease, because the less grease, the greater the likelihood of overheating.

Dual mass wheel regeneration

If the mass flywheel is damaged, the cost of replacing it with a new element will not be low. Many substitutes can be found on the market for popular car models, but prices can be high. Remanufacturing can be a solution, many companies offer such a service, declaring an acceptable price and almost factory quality.

Remanufacturing experts say that 80-90% of dual mass flywheels are repairable. When deciding to take advantage of the workshop offer, let's first check what kind of guarantee we will receive: a commissioning, one-year or two-year warranty. Then the "double mass" should be dismantled from the car and sent to a specialist providing such a service. The term of repair depends on the size and type of damage, and lasts from 1 hour, and sometimes up to a day.

The regeneration of a two-mass wheel consists in replacing damaged elements with new ones: bearings, sliders, arc springs and a collecting disk. Then the friction surfaces are ground and turned, which makes it possible to even out the defects that occur during operation. The damping unit is also filled with special grease. Then the wheel is bent on a specialized machine and riveted. You should ask the service center what parts he uses, as low-quality components (despite the fact that these are new elements) can cause them to wear out quickly, which will expose us to repeated failure after a short time, and therefore further unnecessary costs. .

At the end of the work, each "double mass" must be balanced, a very important event that should not be forgotten. In extreme cases, an unbalanced part can damage the clutch, gearbox, and even the engine.

Dual wheel. Correct use

If you want to avoid costly repairs, you should follow a few simple rules. First, avoid driving at very low RPMs, as this puts undue stress on the springs and dampers. Secondly, you should not move abruptly and shift gears as smoothly as possible, without unnecessary jerks. In addition, the so-called engine chokes and starts from a high gear, such as second gear.

Is regeneration of a dual-mass flywheel beneficial?

If a reliable repair shop determines that your flywheel can be repaired, you can trust them. It should be noted whether the specialists we have chosen use high-quality materials, and for how long they give a guarantee. It is also worth carefully checking the opinion on the Internet about a particular plant. Professional service will cost us much less than a new part, and the durability should be comparable.
