Repair and replacement of BMW engines

BMW engine repair depends on the extent of the damage. The decision to repair should be made only after diagnostics, including computer diagnostics, compression measurement, oil pressure measurement, checking the timing configuration and condition.

If the engine has stalled due to an open circuit or timing, it is enough to visually inspect the damage that has occurred after removing the valve cover and oil pan. Repair in such cases is usually unprofitable and ends with the replacement of the engine with a serviceable one.

In what cases is it possible to repair a BMW engine

In case of damage to the cylinder head or gasket under the cylinder head, confirmed by the diagnosis of exhaust gases in the cooling system, the gasket is replaced with a set of fixing bolts after pre-installation of the cylinder head and checking its tightness.

A common malfunction, especially on 1,8 liter gasoline engines, is valve stem seal leaks, which can be replaced (depending on the car model) without disassembling the cylinder head.

When is an Engine Replacement Recommended?

Engine replacement is carried out in case of serious damage, the repair of which requires disassembly of the cylinder block, replacement of piston rings or pistons, replacement of the crankshaft and bearing shells. The traditional "engine rebuild", sometimes referred to as "engine overhaul", is slowly becoming a thing of the past.

The technology for the production of modern engines and, above all, the pricing policy of manufacturers of spare parts for engines determines that a possible repair of a BMW engine is disproportionately more expensive than replacing an entire engine.

It is cheaper to replace the engine with a used or new one than with a series of problems. For example, if replacement of rings or cylinder liners is required, if honing stones have become unusable, if grinding or replacement of the crankshaft is required.

Terms of repair or replacement

The repair time depends on the type of damage and how it was repaired. The shortest time for a complete engine replacement is usually 2 business days (depending on the type and model of your vehicle). In case of replacement, the time may increase up to 3-5 days, since it is necessary to disassemble the old engine and mount a new one.
