Replacing front shock absorbers BMW 5 E39
We have a BMW E39 car in repair, in which the front shock absorbers (struts) need to be replaced. We will show you how to do it right with your own hands.
Jack up the car, remove the front wheels. With a key of 19, we unscrew the steering rod:
We remove it with the help of an extractor, if you do not have one, then you can remove it with not strong blows of a hammer. With a head of 10, we unscrew the fasteners from the protective sleeve:
And we delete. With two keys for 18, we unscrew the lever:
Next, we need a head for 10 and a key for 10:
Head for 16, key for 18:
Head to 16:
We lower the car and with a head of 13 we unscrew the screws from the shock absorber to the glass:
Loosen the center nut. We press the damper and pull it out of the bow. We tighten the spring, we do it on a special apparatus, in most cases everyone wears ties. Remove the protective plastic cap with a screwdriver. We use the head for 22 and the hexagon for 6, unscrew the bracket:
We fix the head with a key. We take a new shock absorber, before installation we pump it 5 times, for this we lower the rack to the stop and wait until it rises, then lower it again. We insert it into the spring, transfer the parts from the old shock absorber, assemble in the reverse order. The video shows the whole process from start to finish. Some for convenience and safety (so as not to damage) remove the clamp, we did not do this.
The left and right shock absorbers are the same, only the installation is different. It is necessary that the corresponding side of the letter falls into the groove of the stump.
After replacing the shock absorbers (struts), do not forget to immediately visit the wheel alignment.
