Renault Avantime 2.0T Dynamic

Avantime has been controversial since its inception. The unusual body shape, which is a mixture of a coupe and a high-end sedan and later became the basis of the Vel Satis and the new Mégane's curves, raised a lot of dust.

Come to think of it, I'm not entirely sure who this machine is for. Families? You would probably think of the new Espace, which is much more spacious and comfortable. Last but not least, the Avantime has a downside - a huge (and heavy) door that opens very narrowly, so I won't let anyone climb into the back seats with kids. And this despite the fact that there is a lot of space in the rear seats!

Ok, this is not the best option for a family vacation. Maybe for dynamic personalities, for whom the new two-liter turbo engine invigorates the mind and body? I would not say. Then I would think of a 172-horsepower Clio, a sporty Mégane Coupé, or an exotic and outrageously wide Clio V6 that doesn't have much room, but are real adrenaline generators. So there are only those who want to stand out from the middle gray (design), but they have enough money to come up with a T-marked car illustration worth about eight million tolar. Architects, sculptors and painters, please login!

Therefore, the aforementioned two-liter four-cylinder engine, which at full throttle sounds barely audible with the recognizable sssssssssss, is not for dynamic drivers. If the engine is almost unaware of the so-called turbo hole, when the engine's response to commands from the accelerator is delayed by a split second and makes the car bounce, Avantime still does not react and does not give pleasure in dynamic driving. Thus, the letter T next to the name does not mean that you will be faster than everyone on the bends, but only helps to overtake and go uphill. On average, we used 13 liters of unleaded gasoline per 100 kilometers.

But time and time again I found that the (more powerful) 6-litre engine was definitely the right fit for this car. The VXNUMX engine is much more gallant, gentlemanly if you will, so it's more suited to sensitive drivers. However, these goofs in acceleration, I would prefer, say, Megan and - the police and technical inspectors, you better not read this - start it a little more. Tuning in Slovenia is also known! Even the six-speed manual transmission found on all versions of the Avantima is fast and comfortable enough not to resist the driver's quick movements at all. But more than shifting speed, you'll appreciate gear ratios that are almost perfectly matched to the aforementioned XNUMX-litre turbo.

Avantima should be admired in two ways: by observing the exterior and by feeling the interior space. With plenty of equipment, say, six airbags, a top-notch six-speaker radio (and remote control!), two skylights, etc., comfort is on a level you'll feel right-handed. Even the generation of computers that are now concocting money for a new car will be pleased with the multitude of electrically powered assistive devices. There is nothing more beautiful than waiting in front of a red traffic light while you press a button to “open” the roof and adjust to the first rays of the sun! The hatch costs its money at lower revs (read: in the city).

evaluation

  • Let's be clear, I could call this a work of art on four wheels. The driver will feel himself in a shop window from open admiration (or disgust) for passers-by. The two-liter turbo engine is powerful enough, but I still recommend the three-liter V6. Not only because of the greater power, but also because of the greater courage in operation.
