Good? There are only two conditions that must be met to be able to state this without hesitation: you must look after a middle-class car, and you must already like French cars a priori. Then it is also worth considering the Lagoon, which is at the end of a life's journey.

Why? Renault has also begun building turbodiesel engines that use Common Rail technology to refuel and then inject fuel directly into the combustion chamber. This is indicated by the letters dCi. There is really nothing particularly new about the engine, as we know a very similar engine called dTi, except that in this case it only has direct injection and not common rail.

Therefore, the transformation itself did not require a huge effort compared to the design, starting from a blank sheet of paper. The new pump and common piping were installed on a fresh but already tested engine and adapted to the new technology.

Result? Very unexpected. Starting from the very end, this engine is economical in its own way, despite the not very light body. Even with our heavy foot, it could consume less than 7 liters of diesel fuel per 100 kilometers, but when racing around the city, consumption increased by more than 11 liters at the same distance. So he can be greedy too, but it is important that he can be easily manipulated with a light foot.

What about usability? No comments. The torque is so great that it seems to the driver that the gear ratios are motocross ratios. Well, it doesn't. It is true, however, that the technicians who monitored the engine during its creation in an attempt to maximize power reduced the usability of the engine below 2100 rpm. So you have to start with a little more throttle, and later, when the RPM is above 2500, the engine is already pulling so hard that downshifting is often completely unnecessary.

It is also nice that the engine is well soundproofed, that its (diesel) principle of operation appears only in the morning, when it is hard and uneven in the cold. It's all.

Other? The gearbox, for example, is good and accurate enough for this car, but overall soft and not strong enough. The worst thing is when shifting from fourth to fifth gear, when sometimes it takes more luck than knowledge to perform a maneuver. A clutch whose pedal is very stiff can sometimes take a little nerve. As if the car was a supercar.

This five-liter sedan also showed a lot of shortcomings on a good 10 kilometers, which could be the result of poor-quality and low-quality assembly, excessive rudeness of the drivers in front of us, or (most likely) both. The design already has a small box without a lock in front of the front passenger, only a depth-adjustable steering wheel, a hard-to-reach lumbar curvature adjustment lever and a tachometer without a red field. This is why it ends with 7000. ...

Despite some shortcomings, Laguna still pleases with a comfortable, soft and reliable chassis, and most importantly, rich equipment. And that is why the Lagoon is more interesting now than ever. Good ending, all is well. A few more months and goodbye, Laguna I!
