How does a car restoration pencil work?
Restoration pencils for repairing damaged paintwork work on the principle of the same materials (primers, paints and varnishes) that are used in ordinary car painting. The difference lies in the accelerated drying and the generally small volume of materials in the pencils, sufficient only for working with small areas.
To understand which pencils will be optimal for a particular damage, consider the main types of paintwork defects.
- Surface scratch or wear. With this defect, only the varnish or the top layer of paint is damaged without exposing the primer. Here it is better to use polishing. However, if it is not possible to polish the damage, you can use a quick-drying pencil varnish. The effect will be worse than polishing, but with proper application, the defect will be partially hidden.
- Scratch to primer. In this case, you can use just one tint pencil, or combine: first tint, and after the paint dries, cover the defect with varnish. The appearance of the soil is already considered significant damage, which after a while will cause open corrosion or swelling of the paint around the perimeter of the defect.
- Chip or scratch to the bare metal. Here it is best to approach the repair in a complex way, using three pencils. First, apply a quick-drying primer. We put the most suitable paint on top. Lacquered on top.
If it is required to temporarily (up to 1 month) protect the metal from the penetration of moisture and salts, regardless of the type of damage, you can use only one restoration pencil with paint or varnish. This is relevant if the decision is made to recolor the element. And the paint from the pencil will play the role of protection against the formation of corrosion until the repair begins.
Before using any tint pencils, the surface to be treated must be cleaned of dirt, dried from water and degreased. Otherwise, if the defect is not prepared for repair, after washing, the protective layer created with a pencil may collapse.

- Sonax scratch correctors. More suitable for small defects, small scratches and chips. It is a quick-drying varnish composition that penetrates into the structure of the scratch and fills it, leveling the reflection surface. Not good for deep scratches.
- "AUTOGRIMER" pencil-putty. Created on the basis of a transparent varnish with the addition of polymers and wax. Designed to work with scratches that have not reached the ground layer. Differs in high speed of drying.
It is important to understand that all touch-up pencils are not full-fledged repair tools for paintwork. They only allow you to partially hide the defect and protect the place of a chip or scratch from moisture penetration, that is, to delay the appearance of corrosion for a while.
