Reverse movement - what is it?

Reverse traffic is still a novelty for Russia, although such lanes have long appeared in Moscow and in some other large cities. Thanks to the reverse movement, it becomes possible to unload the busiest highways. As you know, in the morning the main flow of transport moves to the city center, and in the evening - in the direction of sleeping areas. It is during these hours that traffic jams occur, while you can move in the neighboring lanes in the opposite direction without problems.

The direction of movement along the reverse lane can change to the opposite at certain hours. Such lanes have long existed in many cities in Europe and the USA, and now reverse traffic is being introduced everywhere in Russia.

Layout

How to determine that this band is reverse? Very simple - with the help of road markings. A double dashed line is used - 1,9. It is very important to remember it, because in no other way will you be able to understand that you are moving along a lane with reverse traffic, only at its beginning and end appropriate road signs and traffic lights are installed.

The marking separates such lanes from ordinary lanes, along which vehicles move both in the same direction as you and in the opposite direction. Problems can arise in winter when the markings are covered with snow. In this case, you need to navigate exclusively by signs and traffic lights.

Signs

At the entrance to the road with reverse traffic, signs are installed:

  • 5.8 - at the beginning of the strip;
  • 5.9 - at the end;
  • 5.10 - when entering such a road from adjacent streets.

The direction of movement along the lanes can also be indicated using the sign 5.15.7 - “Direction of movement along the lanes” - and explanatory plates 8.5.1-8.5.7, which indicate the duration of the sign.

Reversible traffic lights

In order for drivers to be able to easily determine when they can move in the direction they need in the reverse lane, and when they cannot, special traffic lights are installed at the beginning of such lanes.

These traffic lights can consist of either two or three fields. They usually have:

  • green arrow - movement is allowed;
  • red cross - entry is prohibited;
  • yellow arrow pointing to the lower corner - move to the indicated lane, after a while the passage will be open to vehicles moving in the opposite direction.

That is, we see that the lanes of reverse traffic are marked with markings, appropriate signs, and even separate traffic lights, which usually hang above the lane itself. At intersections, the signs are duplicated so that the driver sees that he continues to move along the lane with reverse traffic.

Rules for driving on reverse lanes

In principle, there is nothing complicated here. If you are driving straight ahead and all the above signs, traffic lights and markings appear in front of you, you only need to carefully look at the traffic light, and if traffic is allowed on the lane, then enter it and continue on your way.

Problems may arise when entering from adjacent streets. The rules of the road require that when turning both left and right, the driver should occupy the rightmost lane, and only after making sure that the movement in the lane with reverse traffic is allowed, change lanes to it. That is, you can’t just drive into the central lanes allocated for reverse traffic either when turning left or right.

If you are not going to turn into a reverse road, but want to continue straight ahead, then go through the intersection in the same way as any other intersection.

Penalty for reverse movement

The Code of Administrative Offenses does not contain separate articles for lanes with reverse traffic, just as there is no such concept itself.

Fines are levied for incorrect entry at the intersection - 500 rubles, for crossing the markings and exiting into the oncoming one - 5 thousand or deprivation of rights for six months, for bypassing the obstacle with exit to the oncoming one - 1000-1500 rubles.

As you can see, it is not very difficult to deal with such a new concept for us as reverse movement. But on the other hand, the number of traffic jams thanks to him really decreased significantly.
