Anyone who has ever dealt with buying a used car knows that the car must be checked by the VIN code. As we already wrote, the VIN code is the identification number of the car, the manufacturer puts information about this vehicle into this 17-digit sequence of numbers and alphabetic characters:

• car brand;
• Country of Origin;
• the lineup;
• date of manufacture;
• specifications.

All this information is entered into the general database of the manufacturer. In addition, the VIN code is indicated on the documents for the car - in the registration certificate and in the vehicle passport, respectively, when the car leaves the assembly line or is imported from another country to the territory of Russia, during registration, the VIN code is entered into the traffic police database, as well as insurance companies in which the owner draws up CASCO or OSAGO.

As you know, car theft is a fairly common crime in our country and in any other country in the world. Stolen cars are delivered through illegal channels to Russia, and then sold with forged documents. Having bought such a car, the new owner runs the risk of being left without a car and without money.

Also, by the VIN code, you can find out the entire history of the vehicle: whether it has been in accidents, how many owners have changed, it has not been pledged as collateral, and so on.

To protect yourself and buy a normal car - not a credit, not stolen, not survived a lot of accidents - the future owner must carefully check the VIN code of the car. This can be done in several ways.

Checking a car by VIN code on the official website of the traffic police

There is nothing complicated here. You just need to go to the traffic police website - http://www.gibdd.ru/. On the right side of the screen you will see buttons with traffic police services:

• checking fines;
• driver check;
• car check;
• receiving requests.

You need to click on “check vehicle” and you will be redirected to a page where you can check the car, not only by VIN, but also by body or chassis numbers.

In the input field, you need to copy the VIN code and click the "Check for restrictions" button. The system will most likely give you the following answer:

• information on the search for a vehicle with this number was not found in the federal information system of the Ministry of Internal Affairs;
• information on imposing restrictions on registration actions was not found.

That is, in this way we can make sure that this car is not stolen and is not wanted. It is worth noting that we also will not receive information about whether the car in front of us is accidentally credited, whether it is registered at all on the territory of the Federation.

If the car has any restrictions, the system will give an answer:

• search information not found;
• a restriction has been imposed (the car model, date and region of the ban, who imposed the ban, and what kind of ban will be indicated).

It is usually indicated that a ban on registration actions has been imposed, that is, this car cannot be re-registered to a new owner.

The official website of the traffic police is visited daily by a large number of users, and often the system displays a message that, for one reason or another, the verification service is temporarily unavailable, and offers to try again later. In such cases, you can use alternative sites, which are also quite a lot on the Web. There are also paid services where you can get much more information about this car:

• date of manufacture;
• names of previous owners;
• date of registration on the territory of the Russian Federation;
• fines, traffic accidents;
• loans, restrictions.

The cost of such a check can reach two hundred rubles.

When buying a used car, you need to use all available methods to check its past. Often people neglect such rules and face very serious problems.

At the moment, there are even apps for smartphones to check the history of a car by VIN. If you do not trust such means, then you can contact the traffic police department directly with a request for verification.
