The Russians are building a floating nuclear power plant

Akademik Lomonosov is the name of the world's first floating nuclear power plant. The Russians have been continuing the project of building a land-based power plant with a design capacity of 70 MW since 2007. It should be launched in 2019.

Even the disaster and the ongoing problems with the radioactive spills from Fukushima, Japan, did not stop them from building a floating power plant. The designers assure that low-enriched uranium will be used as fuel in the Lomonosov hostel, in contrast to the highly enriched fuel used, for example, in nuclear icebreakers. This is done in order to protect the unit, for example, from attacks by terrorists who would be interested in fuel for nuclear weapons.

The planned power plant capacity of up to 70 MW should be enough to provide electricity, heat and desalination of sea water to a city with a population of 200. The task of the floating nuclear power plant will be to provide energy to residents of cities located in areas with undeveloped infrastructure, for example, in the Far North.
