A guide to legal car modifications in New Jersey

Those who live in New Jersey or plan to move to the area must be aware of the vehicle modification regulations in order for their vehicles or trucks that have been modified to be considered road legal. Below are the requirements for the state of New Jersey.
Sounds and noise
The state of New Jersey has regulations regarding noise from your car's sound systems or muffler.
Sound systems
Sound systems are not subject to state laws. Individual counties throughout the state have rules and regulations that must be followed. Failure to comply with local noise regulations may result in a fine of $3,000 or less.
Muffler
Mufflers are required on all vehicles and must be in working order to limit unusually loud or excessive noise.
Silencer lines, cut-outs and similar devices are not permitted on motorways.
Functions: Always check with your local New Jersey county laws to ensure you are complying with any municipal noise ordinances that may be stricter than state laws.
Frame and suspension
New Jersey frame and suspension regulations include:
Vehicles cannot be taller than 13 feet 6 inches.
Raised or elevated vehicles must pass an elevated vehicle inspection.
The maximum allowable lift is based on the Gross Vehicle Weight Rating (GVWR) and is measured to the bottom of the driver's side door.
Gross vehicle weight less than 4,501 – Maximum height is 7 inches higher than factory.
Gross Weight Rs 4,501-7,500 – Maximum height is 9 inches higher than factory.
Gross Weight Rs 7,501-10,000 – Maximum height is 11 inches higher than factory.
Front lifting blocks are not allowed.
The suspension system must use the basic elements used by the vehicle manufacturer and must match the original geometry of the system.
Bumpers cannot be lower than 16 inches from the ground.
ENGINES
There are no engine modification or replacement rules in New Jersey, but emissions testing is required.
Lighting and windows
Lanterns
One projector is allowed.
Two auxiliary lights are allowed, but must be closed on the roadway.
Red, yellow and blue LED, flashing or rotating lights require a permit for use as signal lights.
Window tinting
- The windshield cannot be tinted.
- Tinted front side windows are prohibited.
- Rear side and rear windows can be tinted to any degree.
- Side mirrors are required if the rear window is tinted.
- Reflective tinting is not allowed.
